Specifically, we are trying to print out some of the texinfo documents associated with some software we are trying to install. We are having trouble printing out the texinfo documents involved. (We also tried printing some small document we received and received additional problems.) These files all came from net and were not modified by us. Thus, there is an installation or invocation file. The following problem happened on two different texinfo documents. From the log, you appear to have a copy of texinfo.tex, which defines the macros TeX needs to understand the TeXinfo documents, and is \include'd by documents written in the TeXinfo format.. You also appear to be formatting a document called texinfo, which I imagine is the texinfo.texi document from the GNU Emacs distribution. > The following problem happened on two different texinfo documents. > > Script started on Fri Jul 31 20:53:12 1992 > uxa% tex texinfo > This is TeX, C Version 3.0 > (texinfo.tex Loading texinfo package [Version 2.30]: Basics, fonts, > ! Font \tenbf=cmb10 scaled 1095 not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. This is a basic problem, related to your TeX installation, not to TeXinfo. There's a section of texinfo.tex which defines names of fonts, one of these being cmb10 scaled at \magstephalf, to give an approximate 11pt font (\magstephalf = sqrt(1.2)). When TeX reads the command \font\tenbf=cmb10 scaled \magstephalf from line 440 of texinfo.tex (according to your log), it needs to find the metrics file (cmb.tfm) for the font and complains when it can't be located, hence the error message above. Check that the directory where your TFM files are stored contains cmb10.tfm and regenerate it using METAFONT from the Computer Modern font sources, or fetch it from an archive on the network. This is what it should look like: {34}% tex texinfo.texi This is TeX, C Version 3.1 (texinfo.texi (texinfo.tex Loading texinfo package [Version 2.29]: Basics, fonts, page headings, tables, indexing, sectioning, toc printing, environments, defuns, cross reference, and turning on texinfo input format.) When I tried both of them, > I was informed I had hbox overflow errors. Were they technical documents containing either technical words, computing acronyms or fragments of program code? Overfull hboxes are very common with this sort of material and usually occur because TeX doesn't know how to hyphenate one of the words on the line where the overfull hbox is located. Either tell TeX how to hyphenate some of the words using hyphenation exceptions, change the layout of the document (wider margins, for example), or rewrite the document. > Overfull \hbox (20.06345pt too wide) in paragraph at lines 17--111 This is only about 1/3 inch, not too bad if a long technical word couldn't be hyphenated. - --Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 92 10:48:25 -0600 From: "George D. Greenwade" Subject: Chicago Manual of Style files on FILESERV/Niord Keywords: BibTeX, Chicago style Any number of times, people have asked for a Chicago Manual of Style (Turabian) citation format in BibTeX. I would like to thank Glenn Paulley , who has forwarded me a set of three files to do this, which are now available from SHSU. I have not tested these exhaustively, but it appears that they are somewhat LaTeX specific in design, although I am sure that the LaTeX sub-style option, chicago.sty, can be tweaked to operate in TeX. The citation formats supported include: (author-last-name year) (author-last-name and author-last-name year) (author-last-name et al. year) (author-last-name) author-last-name author-last-name (year) (author-last-name and author-last-name) (author-last-name et al.) (year) or (year, year) year or year, year The reference list ordering is alphabetical by author or whatever passes for author in the absence of one. Support for abbreviated author lists and for year-only citations are provided by having the citations actually look like: \citeauthoryear{full-author-info}{abbrev-author-info}{year} The chicago.sty LaTeX file is required to use the BibTeX styles chicago.bst and chicagoa.bst. Features of chicago.bst: ======================== - full names used in citations, but abbreviated citations are available. - if an entry has a "month", then the month and year are also printed as part of that bibitem. - book, inbook, and manual use "location: publisher" (or organization) for address and publisher. All other types list publishers separately. - "pp." are used to identify page numbers for all entry types except articles. - organization is used as a citation label if neither author nor editor is present (for manuals). - "et al." is used for long author and editor lists. Features of chicagoa.bst: ========================= - supports an "annotation" field for annotated bibliographies. - all other features of chicago.bst. To retrieve these three files via e-mail, include: SENDME BST.CHICAGO* in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET (FILESERV@SHSU.edu). The files are available for anonymous ftp retrieval from Niord.SHSU.edu (192.92.115.8) in the directory [FILESERV.BST], either individually or packaged together in the ZIP archive CHICAGO.ZIP. The most notable changes or additions are: * Added support for including PostScript figures in a document using the macros known as epsf.tex. The file epsf.tex is included in the TeXsis distribution. The use of these macros is well documented in the TeXsis manual. * Added support for Ralph Smith's Formal Script fonts, assuming that they are available. Just use \scr in place of \cal. The rsfs fonts are available from lifshitz.ph.utexas.edu. * The macros for making lists of figures and tables have been improved (along the lines of the table of contents macros). * A \PhysRev style has been added. This is autoloaded from the style file PhysRev.txs. * The definition of \thesis has been moved to a style file called thesis.txs, which makes it easier to customize. Examples from both Yale University and the University of Texas are included. * Added to the distribution a separate file called Example.tex which contains a short example physics paper which uses the TeXsis macros. A shortcut around the manual. * Added \Footnote to act like \footnote but with the text of the footnote singlespaced and in 10 pt. type. * Improvements to the list-making environments. * Added a \twinout layout which puts two pages on one piece of paper, printed sideways (landscape mode). Also improved the double column macros. * Lots of other small additions. Many improvements and additions to the manual. An index has been added to the manual, using the index making macros of index.tex and the MakeIndex program. We have included index.tex in the distribution of TeXsis, but the only documentation at present is that contained in the source file. Still, that's enough to get started. To make it easier for the casual reader of electronic preprints ("e-prints") to print a TeXsis document we have also put all of the core TeXsis macros into one source file (called mtexsis.tex), with all the comments and blank lines removed. A reader who does not have TeXsis on his/her system can then (usually) simply get this file, add "\input mtexsis" to the manuscript file if needed, and print the paper with Plain TeX. The code and documentation for TeXsis 2.15 can be obtained via anonymous ftp over the Internet from lifshitz.ph.utexas.edu. To copy the files, run ftp on your computer and connect to lifshitz.ph.utexas.edu (or 128.83.131.57). Give the login name "anonymous" and your e-mail address as the password. The TeXsis files for Unix machines are in a (possibly compressed) tar file in the directory /texsis, or in shar bundles in the directory /texsis/Unix. For Vax/VMS machines the files are available in DCL bundles (.COM files which unpack themselves into many files) in the subdirectory /texsis/VMS. The code is the same in any case, it's just packed differently. [If you can't use anonymous ftp we can arrange send you the files via e-mail. Please specify VMS or Unix, if possible.] Note also: - The macros for making ruled tables with Plain TeX known as ruled.tex are available independently in the subdirectory /texsis/tables. - The macros for making an index using Plain TeX and the MakeIndex program are available in /texsis/index. - Ralph Smith's formal script fonts are available in /texsis/rsfs.
