README for the SVR4 binary distribution of XFree86 version 2.1 -------------------------------------------------------------- This distribution is also available from the following sites: ftp.win.tue.nl:/pub/XFree86/SVR4 stasi.bradley.edu:/pub/XFree86/SVR4 These binaries were compiled under Esix SVR4 (4.0.3A) and are believed to work on all other vendors' Intel based SVR4.0 and SVR4.2 releases. XFree86 version 2.1 is based on MIT X11R5 PL26. The compiler used to build this distribution was gcc-2.4.5, with the -m486, -O2 flags. The server was built with the following: - Type1 font support - support for compressed .pcf fonts - support for streams-based local connections - support for local connections from SCO XSight/ODT clients (for SVR4.0.4 with the Advanced Compatibility Package installed). - The mono server contains only the VGA2 driver. To build a server with the HGA2 or BDM2 drivers, use the LinkKit. - The servers do not include PEX. To build a any of the 8-bit colour servers with PEX, use the LinkKit The binary distribution consists of the following files: Required: XFree86-2.1-bin.tar.gz - client binaries XFree86-2.1-lib.tar.gz - run-time libraries and data files XFree86-2.1-inc.tar.gz - header files and bitmaps XFree86-2.1-man.tar.gz - man pages (except XFree86-specific ones) XFree86-2.1-doc.tar.gz - documentation and XFree86-specific man pages XFree86-2.1-cfg.tar.gz - config files for xinit, xdm and fs (only if you haven't already customised these files) XFree86-font.tar.gz - fonts (75dpi, misc, Speedo, Type1) Servers (choose at least one which suits your hardware). The main README file contains a list of chipsets supported by each server. XFree86-2.1-8514.tar.gz - server for IBM 8514/A and true compatibles XFree86-2.1-Mach32.tar.gz - server for ATI Mach32 accelerator boards XFree86-2.1-Mach8.tar.gz - server for ATI Mach8 accelerator boards XFree86-2.1-Mono.tar.gz - monochrome server for VGA and SVGA boards XFree86-2.1-S3.tar.gz - server for S3 accelerator boards XFree86-2.1-SVGA.tar.gz - 8-bit pseudocolour server for SVGA boards XFree86-2.1-VGA16.tar.gz - 4-bit pseudocolour server for VGA boards Optional: XFree86-2.1-lkit.tar.gz - X server reconfiguration kit XFree86-2.1-pex.tar.gz - PEX clients, libraries, headers, fonts, etc XFree86-2.1-slib.tar.gz - Static libraries Note: XFree86-2.1-cfg.tar.gz contains the default configuration files for xinit, xdm and fs. Be careful not to overwrite versions of these files that you may have customised. The fonts have not changed since version 1.2. The XFree86-2.0-2.1.tar.gz file contains everything in the "bin", "lib", and "inc" archives which has changed since XFree86 version 2.0. Note that this doesn't include servers, PEX, linkkit or static libs. The file "FILES-2.1.gz" contains a listing of each of these archives. These gzip'd tar files should be extracted in the directory '/usr/X386'. If you don't have room in /usr, you can extract elsewhere and make a symbolic link to /usr/X386. If you don't have gunzip, there is a binary of version 1.2.2 in this directory. E.g., to extract the "bin" archive, run: gunzip -c XFree86-2.1-bin.tar.gz | tar vxpf - NOTE: You should install this distribution on filesystem which supports long filenames and symbolic links (e.g., ufs). ALSO: The tar files were made using GNU tar (version 1.11.2). If you have problems extracting these files, try the gtar binary in this directory. After installing, please carefully read the files README, INSTALL, README.Config and README.SVR4 in the directory /usr/X386/lib/X11/etc. If want to use the LinkKit and are using 'cc', you will need to install libgcc.a in a directory that is searched by your ld(1). There is a copy of that library in this directory (it is not included in the LinkKit tar file). Refer also to the README file in /usr/X386/lib/Server. In addition to the core distribution, there is a selection of contributed clients and libraries (including Xview 3.0 pl2). These are contained in the files (which are in the Extras directory): extra-bin.tar.Z-?? extra-lib.tar.Z-?? extra-inc.tar.Z-?? extra-man.tar.Z-?? extra-fonts.tar-?? (these fonts are only required if you use xtex) Please note: the "extra" distribution hasn't been updated since July 1992, so most of the things included there are not the most recent versions. NOTE: some clients included here may require files that are not included. One example is xtex which requires TeX's *.tfm files (but if you use TeX, you should already have them). If you have problems with any part of the core distribution, send e-mail to . The "extra" distribution is not supported. If you do need to ask questions about it, send e-mail to . 10 March 1994
