I regret to say that the files on the latest tape from Washington are not
easily accesible over FTP or mail. This problem was discussed at the
meeting on Tuesday February 28 and it is hoped that a solution will be in
place by the time the next digest is issued.

I apologise for any inconvenience that this is causing.

Latest TeXhax in the Archive is #10 (09 and 10 received Feb 22 1989)
Latest TeXmag in the Archive is V3N1 (received February 28 1989)

I notice in TeXhax Digest Volume 89 #3 that dvipage 3.0 has been released,
supporting .pk font files.

Will this be in the Aston archive soon?

+++Editor - Yes, if someone can supply it. +++

Subject: Fonts and general info

I've just picked up a copy of the TEX distrbution from uk.ac.ic.doc.src
and now have a question - where can I get the necessary fonts from?
I've heard about various font types - pxl -pk (??) etc - what are
the differences in the font types, which ones do I definately need, and
which ones should I try to get hold of if possible?

As you can probably tell I'm really not very well up on TeX, so any
other helpful information would also be greatfully received.

Please reply by e-mail, as I'm not currently on this mailing list.
(How do I get on? - 'uktex-request@aston' ???)

Try TeXsun for suntools (TeXx for X-windows). It supports PK-format
files; it'll use the 300dpi fonts intended for a laser printer,
sampling them down as necessary. It also displays pages two-up, so
you can monitor page breaks, if you ask nicely.

Try using the mail-server's FILES/ENCODE command. I'm not sure how
well this will work for straight binary files, as opposed to
compressed files...but I'm sure someone will tell me soon!

SUBJECT: TeX and LaTeX Introductory Guides

Does anyone offering a TeX/LaTeX service have any introductory material for
aspirant users of TeX and particularly LaTeX? Whilst not wishing to detract
from the penmanship and the pockets of Knuth and Lamport, the volume and cost
of their respective books can be a deterrent to prospective punters.

Any offers of copy will be gratefully received and a generous acknowledgement
will be made if the material is put to use!

You recently supplied me with a Unix tape with a copy of Tex and Latex on
thanks for that. However I have been trying to install Latex but without
much success. I have run the main makefile, and this works fine, and
produces initex and virtex, but when I try to build latex or tex by
inputting plain or lplain to initex, it comes up with a whole load of
error messages about being unable to load fonts, e.g
Font twtysy=cmsy10 scaled 2074 not loadable: Bad metric (TFM) file.
<to be read again>
l.418 font twtysy = cmsy10 @ magscale4
I wasn't able to read the size data for this font,
It turns out that initex doesn't like any attemp to use scaled 10pt fonts.
Also later on it complains about dimension too large when it gets to the
picture part.
tabbing, array, picture,
! Dimension too large.
<recently read> @wholewidth l.5567 thinlines
I have tried running the whole process from scratch several times, and
have tried 16bit and 32bit versions as well as applying the patch in
texpatch to ctex.ch. Have you got any ideas how I could fix things ??
Thanks in advance

Oops...sorry Peter, my previous two missives were devoid of a subject -
I will try not to do it again. My only excuse is that I don't really
understand the system I sent them from.

I picked up the rnototex.ini that Phil supplied - rnototex finds it, reads
it, complains it doesn't understand it, and refuses to translate anything
other than the section heads. I repeat my question of last week - What's gone
wrong? Let me add another question this week - how do I fix it?

        Paul.
