TeX Archive SHUTDOWN
The VAX system is being upgraded to VMS 5 and consequently access to
the archive will be closed at 0700 BST on Thursday 20 July 1989 and should
be restarted at 0800 BST on Tuesday 25 July 1989.
The VAX system used for info-tex will be upgraded commencing at 1800 BST on
Tuesday 25 July 1989 and will be restarted by 0800 BST on Monday 31 July 1989.
Issue 28 will be posted during the week beginning 31 July 1989.

Subject: DYNA.STY
A user here has received a document from Germany in LaTeX format. It
uses the BOOK.STY, but also looks for DYNA.STY. I can find no trace of
this either from our distribution tape, or in the Aston archive. Has
anyone ever heard of this?

1. In the table of contents, I get messages about overfull hboxes
and the chapter number of the main chapter headings are overwritten.
Does it happen when you use CMR fonts? It sounds to me as if your chapter
numbers are (for some reason) simply too wide. the tableofcontents macros force
them into quite a narrow box.
2. A number of the accents and diacriticals supplied by TeX, such as
a cedilla are ommitted when the file is printed. Any solution known?
a glorious chestnut resurfaces. it depends on the way you have acquired TFM
files for the PostScript fonts - the Adobe default encoding is different to
TeX's, so the accents are not in the same place. You can either leave TeX alone
and get dvi2ps to do the moving around of characters, or leave the PostScript
alone and redefine things in TeX. There are examples of both ways of doing it,
if you look at the offerings in [.fonts.adobe.pslatex] and
[.drivers.dvi2ps.dvitops]. If I may declare an allegiance, I use Adobe encoding
and use James Clark's macros for redefining things in TeX. I should also say
that I see very little reason to prefer Oostrum's dvi2ps - Clark's dvitops is,
to my mind, cleaner & faster and has more facilities.

Sebastian Rahtz has generously donated a fair weight of Sun 3 binaries
to the archive. I have some reservations about this. They must take up
I think the background to this addition to the archive is that a request for
VMS binaries is quite common, and I felt we might as well add Sun binaries
while doing the job. I know people can recompile it all in a few hours, but why
should they if Peter can spare the disk space for a while? I would agree that
if/when there is pressure on space, these should be the first things to go
SunOs 3.x. There are also the hard coded paths.
Is there some way around this initial hard-wired path? They can of
course all be changed with environment variables
Sorry to sound ungrateful, but everyone with a Sun has a C compiler
no actually true, I think. it isn't an obligatory purchase, is it?
there may be people who buy a Sun to run FORTRAN (aargh), and don't
need a compiler

Walter Carlip recently sent me the following info about OzTeX's availability
in the US:

A public domain version of TeX for the Macintosh is now available by anonymous
ftp. The program is called OzTeX (Version 1.1) and includes Modula-2 source
and all necessary fonts and input files. The ftp addresss is

In the near future (thanks to Craig Ruff), OzTeX might also be available from
Name: handies.ucar.edu
Address: 128.117.64.4
As usual, use the login name "anonymous" and use your own login id for a
password. Once logged in, you will find the parts of OzTeX in
subdirectories of pub/sources/OzTeX. Everything has been preprocessed with
Stuffit-1.5.1 and binhex. You will need at least version 1.5.1 of Stuffit,
since the archives contain folders. The subdirectory
/pub/sources/OzTeX/binaries contain copies of the stuffit archives before
stuffing. Other subdirectories contain the OzTeX program, OzTeX sources,
OzTeX inputs (e.g., AMSTeX, LaTeX, etc.), and Font binaries of various
sizes in binhex'd stuffit archives. Of course, Stuffit-1.5.1 and binhex4
are available by anonymous ftp from the info-mac archive, at
sumex-aim.stanford.edu (36.44.0.6).

Subject: label printing
a couple of months ago, I sent in macros to UKTeX for printing labels in LaTeX,
which were pretty boring; they are still boring, but I have copied
version 2 to the Aston Archive as
[tex-archive.latex.contrib]labels.sty
because I have extended the macros to be able to read free-format
labels, ie with no special markup except a blank line between
addresses: you now have have a choice of methods for supplying the
information to be printed on the labels:
a) like this: \addresslabel{me\\
here and there
england
}
for each label
b) or you can just type in the addresses as you want, with blank lines
between them, all in a `labels' environment:
\begin{labels}
Joe Bloggs
10 Acacia Ave
Newtown
Sam Beckett
Bastille
Paris
\end{labels}
c) if you already have labels in the latter format in a file,
just have a .tex file like this:

d) if you want to *duplicate* the label, there is a counter called
\numberoflabels which you can set, so
\numberoflabels=4

will print the address label 4 times
My thanks to Phil Taylor for supplying the basis of these macros, ie
the ones which redefine `endofline' to be an active character. I
almost think I understand \futurelet now....

Speaking as one who has spent a little time playing around with change
files (but not having written anything in WEB), I'd like to make a
brief comment on Brian Hamilton Kelly's suggestion regarding the
numbering of changed sections.
Generally, when one is producing a change file, one has a WEAVE
listing of the original WEB program to hand. The numbers one enters
in any comments then relate to the original listing. Very rarely, if
ever, does one then produce other WEAVE listings until the
implementation works. (I *never* processed my VMS change file for TeX
with WEAVE until last week!) The reason for this is, for most people,
simply making the program run is enough; spending more time making
what is effectively a program listing is not perceived as time
well-spent.
However, I would like to concur, in principle, with Brian's
suggestion, simply on the grounds that it would help maintainability
(if there is such a word). And, if he should produce improved versions
of TANGLE and WEAVE, I for one would be very happy to use them.

Subject: TeX previewing under NeWS
There are punters out there who use a Sun workstation and are
neither still stuck with suntools nor wedded to X Windows, ie they are
into the Good Life of screen PostScript with NeWS (and of course you
can now combine X and NeWS); the subset of this merry band who use TeX
will want to check out the Turing Institute's GoodNeWS improvements
to, and extensions to, NeWS. Inter alia, the GoodNeWS distribution
includes a good TeX previewer, and a NeWS drawing package for
including graphics in TeX.
GoodNeWS1.2 is freely available, and has been announced in various
places; I mention it in UkTeX for the sake of completeness in any
discussion of Sun TeX previewers. Also because Southampton is one of
the sites distributing GoodNeWS; collect it via binary FTP from
<TEX>GoodNeWS1.2.tar.Z@uk.ac.soton.ecs

Its about 4Mb, so find the space first..

Dear Peter Abbott, Fanny Leech thought that you might be able to help.
We have the PCtex version of Latex, and DVIPS from Arbortext, and wish to
integrate postscript source files in the output which we send to our
Apple LaserwriterII.
Though I can get the postscript into the Tex, I cannot get the program to
revert to processing Tex properly.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Joe Whittaker, Maths,

Sorry to bother you personally, but I don't know how to drive an
archive server you may have set up.
The question is: Is there a version of bibtex in the archives which
is written in C?
We do not have Pascal on our Sun-4 machines and do not want to fork out
hundreds of pounds just for bibtex.
Alternatively, do you know anyone with a Sun-4 and working binary which
ccould be sent to me?
