  Can anyone advise me:
   a) whether the Lucida maths fonts are available anywhere
   b) how to get them
   c) what they are like

a) We were sent some rather crummy photocopies of the symbols themselves about
six months ago, but with no indication of when, if ever, they would be
available.

Rumour had it last summer that they were having trouble getting the extra .TFM
parameters needed to typeset maths with them correct.

Following may have more info:

Richard Southall, Paul Bacsich, Adobe

(apologies for my sense of humour towards the end of the list!).

c) Nothing special to my untutored eye, but impossible to comment as have not
seen them in use, ie in context of maths typesetting and with the other fonts in
the family.

The family as a whole seems to me to do little for high resolution
phototypesetting but they may well be what every 300dpi machine has been
waiting for.

Doug McDonald <mcdonald@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu> has written a TeX screen previewer
for the IBM PC and has kindly placed it in the public domain. The previewer,
DVIVGA, is based on the Beebe family of DVI drivers and supports the
following:

    Display adapters:	EGA, VGA and MCGA (colour and monochrome)

    Font formats:	PK, GF and PXL

    Computers: IBM PC or compatible running MS/PC-DOS with
			at least 512kB RAM. All CPUs are supported, but
			ideally, you will have at least an 80286 CPU clocked
			at 8MHz or faster and a reasonably fast hard disk.

DVIVGA is now available from the Aston archive as 6 BOO-encoded, self-
extracting ZIP files in directory [TEX-ARCHIVE.DRIVERS.MS-DOS.DVIVGA].
They are:

	DVIVGA.BOO	- the program and its documentation
	SOURCES.BOO	- the source code for Microsoft C v5.1
	FONTS1.BOO	- screen font files in PK format (part 1 of 4)
	FONTS2.BOO	- screen font files in PK format (part 2 of 4)
	FONTS3.BOO	- screen font files in PK format (part 3 of 4)
	FONTS4.BOO	- screen font files in PK format (part 4 of 4)

A short while ago, I posted a ``flame'' about the UK's uucp gateway (UK.AC.UKC)
refusing delivery of incoming international mail crossing between the uucp and
Janet networks. Naturally, I had previously queried this with UKC directly,
but their reply had been delayed for quite cogent reasons, and I was so
incensed at the time that I wanted to ensure that all persons who might be
trying to correspond with us were informed that their mail would not reach us
if it were to be routed via uucp.

I now understand why it is that UKC charge the recipient for incoming mail
(put simply, it's because they have to poll Europe and America for incoming
mail, and thus bear the costs of reception as well as delivery). Because of
this, we are now taking steps to become registered so that we can continue to
receive uucp mail (although we currently don't seem to have any requirement to
originate such traffic).

I STILL am disappointed that it is necessary for UKC to cut off incoming mail
in this manner, in particular, that the ADDRESSEE is informed that mail has
been received, but rejected, and the poor old originator doesn't even get told
of the failure --- however, I can appreciate that it's cheaper to inform the
addressee than to send a rejection response to the originator. Still, it's
not very useful for the addressee to be told about the refusal of the mail, if
the only address given for the originator is via uucp!

The situation can, I am given to understand, escalate still further ---
apparently, if an unregistered site continues to receive incoming messages,
the latter will eventually be discarded without notifying either sender or
addressee.

I seems a great shame that UKC is so starved of funding that they have to make
any charge AT ALL to the academic community (commercial customers should [and
do] make appropriate payments). There must be something that JANET users
can do to try to ensure that UKC is given an appropriate grant to fund what is
the only UK gateway between two important networks. Any suggestions received
will be posted on to the appropriate authorities --- but please, contact me
directly --- UKTeX and TeXhax are not really the correct fora in which to
conduct this correspondence.

I fetched Mittelbach's multicol.sty and multicol.tex files from the
Aston Archive recently (ver.1.0d). I already have ltugbot.sty and
tugbot.dat(es), so I was all set to run it off and have a read. I
had already had success with the doc.sty/tex files, so I was confident.
But after doing four pages, multicol.sty packed up, having overflowed
TeX's save stack.

  Has anyone else had the problem? Error log follows:

Following two days of furious activity in the archive, the following have
been made available in the archive:

o Adrian Clark's halftone stuff in [TEX-ARCHIVE.HALFTONE]. This comprises
   Knuth's halftone font, software for translating image data to TeX input
   files, examples and documentation.

o VMS object modules for the following programs:

	dvitype		2.9
	gftodvi		1.7
	gftopk		1.4
	gftype		2.2
	mf, inimf	1.7
	pktype		2.2
	pltotf		2.3
	tangle		2.9
	tex, initex	2.991
	tftopl		2.5
	weave		2.9

   These were compiled under VMS 5, but should be able to be linked under
   any version of VMS. The important programs were compiled /OPT. They are
   to be found in the directory [TEX-ARCHIVE.BINARY.VMS].

o WEB and Change files corresponding to these object modules are all to
   be found below the directory [TEX-ARCHIVE.SRC]. (There are duplicates
   of these files elsewhere in the archive; these will be removed in the
   next few days.) The TeX change file incorporates the big-memory and
   editor interfaces previously described in UKTeX.

Change files and object modules for the other useful utilities
(e.g., BibTeX) will be made available in the immediate future.

Subject: Citing all refs in BibTeX

I have seen several clever programs and shell scripts for creating a
LaTeX file which cites all the entries in a bibliography; they all
work through the .bib file, and convert every entry into the corresponding
\nocite or whatever.

I recently discovered a much better way to do the same thing. BibTeX
has an (undocumented, as far as I can tell) feature whereby you can say
\nocite{*} to cite the entire bibliography. For example, the LaTeX file

   \documentstyle{article}
   \begin{document}

   \nocite{*}

   \bibliographystyle{alpha}
   \bibliography{foo}

   \end{document}

will cite every entry in the bibliography file foo.bib.
