In the latest UK-TeX, Peter Hamer <pgh@uk.co.stc.stl> and Kate Crennell
<kmc@uk.ac.rutherford.dec-e> both asked about public-domain TeX for MS-DOS
based systems. In the Aston archive, under [TeX-Archive.TeX.Ms-Dos.SbTeX],
will be found SB24TEX.BOO --- Wayne Sullivan's public-domain eight-bit
MS-DOS TeX implementation. Highly recommended. ** Phil.

Subject: VGA mono dvi previewer requested

Does anyone have a dvi previewer for a mono VGA screen (PC clone - an
Amstrad 2286 to be precise)? If it could sample its fonts from a 300dpi
set of pk files that would be even better! (but not essential). I have all
the other bits (TeX, LaTeX, dvi to postscript converter, tfm and pk files,
style files etc.) which I am willing to distribute pass on (send ten
1.2 Mbyte high density 5.25" floppies OR 1.44 MByte 3.5" floppies plus
postage - plus optional donation to St Cuthbert's Hospice, Durham).

Please can you tell me where I can get PC-TeX from? We need TeX, a DVI
previewer, and a Postscript driver for a PC clone, and we have no money.
is there any chance of a CHEST deal for PC-TeX? Kate Crennell

No need to spend money *IF* you are prepared to take a litte trouble
and don't want support from a company. PubTeX, DosTeX and SBTeX are
all available from the Aston archive at no cost; DVIEW is a free
previewer; dvitops is an excellent printer driver for PostScript which
compiles on a PC. go for it, as they say.

Dear Sir/Madam,
firstly, apologies for not addressing this to you by name - it is part of
a large mailshot. I am sending this to everyone who's name is in my (very
large) file of corresponence about TeX, the typesetting program.

If this means nothing to you, you may discard this mail and read no further -
sorry to have bothered you. The address list I generated for this mail shot
will not be used again: I will only send in future to those who reply to this
mail.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I now have a set of ten floppy discs with a release of TeX for the Acorn
Archimedes. If you have been waiting for a copy of TeX, please mail me now
             ===========================================
to let me know, or simply send me ten formatted Archimedes floppies and
return mailer/postage and I shall post the release to you. (Address: Graham
Toal, 76 Clare Court, Judd Street, London WC1H 9QW, Tel: +44 (1) 837 3806)

If you run a file-server or mail-server, and would like to place a copy of
========================================
this tex release on your system, again, please let me know. I cannot upload
this much data to you by mail (I use a telephone connection) so I shall have
to send you the files by post.

There are no copying restrictions on this port. Feel free to give it away to
friends & colleagues. The release consists only of TeX, and 300dpi fonts
with a Postscript laser driver. It needs an Archimedes of MORE than 1Mb, and
it needs a hard disk. There is no previewer (yet).

Thanks to the three correspondents who sent me information about
DINA4.STY. It would appear to be simply the DIN (Deutches Industries
Norm) A4 paper size. If you have DINA4 specified, first try the usual
A4 style option.

I had a fairly substantial version sent from JG@UK.oxford.prg which I'm
sure can be sent to others who need it. Thanks also to
GH@lancaster.physics.vax1 and Erich Neuwirth (A4433DAB@EARN.AWIUNI11)
who also sent helpful information.

Subject: TeX on the Atari ST

I have come across the following distributor of TeX for the Atari ST.
The package includes LaTeX and a previewer, and costs 10 pounds, including
p&p for 4 disks. Suppose it might save the time involved in file transfering
it out of the ARCHIVE.

Let's see now, that's 400 pounds for computer with a REAL megabyte of memory,
AT speed, and mono monitor; about 300 to 400 for a hard disk to make TeX
workable; 10 pounds for TeX and LaTeX; then there's the printer...d*mn it,
how DO you make these comparisons?

I am interested in using BIBTEX for references within
scientific journal papers, but neither the detailed formats of
the citation within the body of the paper, nor the details of
the reference section itself, follow the format of the
journals I am likely to subscribe to. I suspect that this
problem can be solved by a different "bibliographystyle", and
by a suitable set of "string" commands in the .BIB file. My
journals are those associated with meteorological and
geophysical matters, for example:

Quart. J. Roy. Meteor. Soc.
Meteorological Mag.
J. Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology
J. Applied Meterology
J. Geophys. Research
Advances in Radio Research
Advances in Geophysics
J. Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics
J. Climatology
J. remote Sensing Soc.
Weather
Rev. Sci. Instrum.
Proc. Inst. Radio Eng.
Proc IEEE
Radio Sci.
J. Hydrology
Monthly Weather Review
Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc.

Can anyone please help?

Calling all UK University user-service punters! Do you make a style file
available to users which conforms to your local thesis regulations. If so
could you let me have a copy. I'm interested from the point of view of
hacking a version to conform to our own regulations and also to see
what concessions you may have obtained from the powers that be in the
way of line spacing and other layout characteristics.

P.S I already have a copy of the UC thesis style pulled from the archive.

  Thanks

Hello,
I talked to you at the TeX89 meeting in Karlsruhe about the uktex
newsletter, and various other things. It appears that uktex is gatewayed into
a local newsgroup, and it has just started appearing there.
I would like more information about the UKTUG meeting on October 11,
if you have anything. If you're going to put anything in uktex, please don't
bother sending me it personally.

Editor - VMS version is available but I do not know about UNIX versions.

I've
looked through the most likely files, but haven't found anything. The other
things which I am looking for which are not on the archive are the AFM files
for some Adobe fonts. I have just discovered how to set an explicit return
path for the Adobe server, and I am trying to get them from that source also,
but in case I cannot, here is a list of the fonts I want. Any help would be
appreciated.

Editor - I now have available TeX 2.991 with LaTeX and PSprint (coutesy of
Adrian Clarke and Andrew Trevorrow). The e option when errors occur causes
entry into the Editor. A command file exists which sets up the necessary
symbols for 2.991 etc. To install on VMS (only) send one tape (1600 or 6250)
with the usual return label and postage. Simply use backup to install and obey
the command procedure to invoke the system.
