Some of the sources announced by Donald Knuth have been fetched from
Labrea.Stanford.edu, and are now on the archive. Unless you are an
IMPLEMENTOR of TeX/MF, or are using VAX/VMS, don't bother to read any further.

Right, now that I've established the audience, I am able to announce that I
have put the following files into the archive; the actual Knuth sources reside
in subdirectory [.NEW] of the appropriate part of the archive (with
[.TRIP]/[.TRAP] below that for TeX and MF respectively). The [.VMS]
subdirectory of each [.NEW] contains change files, etc, for generating the

I've been making variations on Knuth's fonts using something like what
you describe. It started as a generic Computer Concrete driver, but I
have done most of the work on a sansserif variation (partway between
CMSS and CMSSQ). I have a "generic driver file", which, given
parameters like "boldness", "slant", "hratio" and "size", calculates
parameters and produces a font. (It works a little more subtly than
just using simple magnification.)
I have a small program `mftemplate' that, given a name like `jimbxi19',
deduces I want to make a 19-pt bold-extended italic version of a font
with generic driver `jim.mf'. It produces an empty file `jimbxi19.mf'
(to get the font name right) and calls METAFONT with:
cmmf '\mode:=CannonCX; boldness:=1.75; hratio:=1.25; italic:=1;
slant:=1/5; input jimbxi19; input jim; bye'
Together with a very rudimentary farmer/worker system to scavenge unused
computers on the network, I can create a set of, say, 16 fonts (roman,
italic, bold, several sizes, various heading fonts) in a few minutes.
The regularity of the names and the fact that there is no need to use
magnified fonts means that the TeX macros to switch between them can be
produced easily, using "higher-order macros" to do all the work.
Changing a whole magazine into a radically different set of fonts
required altering fewer than 20 bytes in the font-loading file.
I am also modifying it to allow independent Roman-ness and Serif-ness
parameters. Currently it simply has a Boolean "roman" flag which
chooses between two different formulae for a particular set of
parameters... The result (still without serifs) is a "Modern Sansserif"
font (moss) which looks surprisingly good. My aim is to have a
parameter from 0 to 1, to get a variety of styles.
I haven't devoted much time as yet to actually duplicating the
CMR/CMMI/CMSS families - simply because the application I had in mind
needed a whole different style of font. On the other hand, the idea of
having `mftemplate' recognise "CSC" and produce a Caps-and-small-caps
version of any font appeals to me. I'll have to look in to this.

Hallo! Can you help us? We are looking for good quality
fonts at 300 dpi and 400dpi for Canon and Xerox PostScript
printers. We already have the resident fonts used by Apple
LaserWriter II printers and the TeX Computer Modern fonts. We
have requests from our users for other fonts for such things
as non-roman alphabets, chemical symbols etc. So we are
compiling a shopping list for our two universities: Durham and
Newcastle upon Tyne. Before doing so we would like to know
what other University sites offer their users. Would you spare
the time to tell me ....
What other PostScript fonts do you offer?
Which software uses them?
Where did you get them from?
What do you think of their quality?
I am prepared to summarise the answers and send it back to those

I need help from "a wizard".
I'm trying to use OzTeX to format a large document on a Mac II with
4megs of RAM. It seems that OzTeX needs reconfiguration to handle a
document of this size. (The docs imply it has hard-wired values so it
will work on a 1meg Mac Plus). I looked over the manuals and examined
it with ResEdit but couldn't figure out how to enlarge it. Could
someone please help me out with this? I don't have the MPW modula 2
compiler but could probably obtain it - can OzTeX be expanded with ResEdit?

I guess this is really directed at Andrew Trevorrow, but others may wish to
comment, thus I sent it in public ...
Not many sites have Modula. Many sites have printers other than the
Laserwriter, PS40 and Linotypes. Is it too much to ask that, in a future
release, there be added a sort of 'general' printer type, say (for VMS) with
a default description that points to the Laserwriter, but which individual
sites can readily configure as an additional 'supported' device without
having to rebuild all the sources, etc.? It would greatly ease the use of
PSPRINT to have such a facility.

rmcs_tex@uk.ac.aston.tex has been somewhat sketchy over the past week, due to
perennial Colour Book Software problems. DEC have now supplied the new (v5.2)
edition, and it claims to be less likely to crash, so perhaps things will look
up again henceforth.
Since the new CBS went up on 22nd Nov, the server has replied to many `where
am I?' requests (presumably stuck in machines all over the world, waiting for
Aston to listen). Unfortunately, due to a residual bug in the way the CBS
installs its database of site names, many relay sites have been falsely
identified to the server under the names of other sites. The database is
being corrected, but please treat with suspicion any rather strange sitename
found to the right of the `@' in the response to the `where am I?' request.
Some of those known to have been specified in error are as follows:

latter's mantle by virtue of being entered into the database in later lexical
order!)

Can any fellow hackers out there help to resolve a puzzle regarding the real
latest version of LPLAIN.TEX?
When I ported the new TeX v2.992 to VMS, and installed it on our system a
couple of weeks back, I decided to generate an updated LPLAIN.TEX from our
existing one, adding appropriate lines (cribbed from DEK's new PLAIN.TEX) that
specify such things as \lefthyphenmin, etc., introduced for TeX v3.
A couple of days later, when I was collecting the MF v1.8 sources from
Labrea.Stanford.edu, I decided to check whether there was an official updated
LPLAIN.TEX; the directory entry at Labrea looked like this:

so it obviously wasn't yet updated for TeX v2.992. However, I collected it
anyway, because it's newer than ours. Naturally, I ran a diff program to see
what else had changed apart from the bits I'd added to our LPLAIN, and found,
as I had anticipated, that the heading had changed to reflect the update:

Did Ogawa make/recommend that lplain should fall into line with plain, or what?

Subject: archive addition: IPA fonts
I am informed that the Washington IPA fonts are to be made public
domain; I have therefore copied them to the Aston archive, and you
will find .tfm, .gf118, .gf300 and .gf1270 directories under
[tex-archive.fonts.ipa], and a small macro file in the main directory.

Subject: Archive addition: Dvi previewer for MS Windows
J McDonald's excellent dvitovga previewer has now been augmented to be
a dvi to MS Windows previewer. All PC Windows hackers will agree that
this is a very wonderful thing. The program (executable only) is in a
ZIP archive in BOO format as
[tex-archive.drivers.dvimswin]dvimswin.boo
Please note that you will need a set of fonts (pk, gf or pxl) and are
referred to the dvivga distribution for these.

Subject: archive additions: dvi2ps strikes again
Kevin Coombes (Michigan) has out of the goodness of his heart tried to
combine in one program the best of all the (many!) versions of the
dvi2ps program which most Unix / TeX / PostScript sites use. He has
called the result `dvi3ps', and you will find his work under
[tex-archive.drivers.dvi2ps.dvi3ps]
I have to admit that I have not tried this version yet, so maybe
someone would like to `review' it for UK TeX? If it is as complete and
uptodate as it looks to be, it means that a new request for a good dvi
to PS program may have to choose between
dvi2ps (oostrum version)
dvi3ps (Coombes)
dvips42 (Rokicki)
dvitps (Bechtolsheim)
dvitops (Clark)
UK TeX is tired of reading that I (and everyone else I know who has
converted to it) find dvitops the simplest to install and the best in
daily use.
I append a list of features of dvi3ps.

Subject: Looking for beta testers for new LaTeX verbatim
Dear fellow TeXers,
during the last few months I've been spending some time on a
re-implementation of the LaTeX verbatim environment. This
is now ready for beta testing. I'm now looking for a moderate
number (say 20--30) people that are willing to test the code,
to look at the documentation, and to tell me what's wrong with
it. I'm addressing *all* people, not only the TeX masters or
TeXnicians.
New features of this implementation are:
- No limit on the size of the verbatim text
- Limited capability to use verbatim inside of other environments
- \verbatimfile command to input a file verbatim
- comment environment that discards all TeX text in its body
- verbatimwrite environment that writes the text in its body to
a file without interpreting it.
If you're interested, send a short message saying so to the BITnet
address given. I can send the files in three possible ways:
1) Via BITnet/EARN File transfer
2) As ordinary mail messages (no protection against corruption)
3) All files put in one .ARC file that is sent UUencoded.
(probably as several files)
What I want from you:
You must promise not to give away the files. I'm rather sure
that most of the bugs have been found but I don't want this to be
given to the public until I'm sure. And I want you to report to me
what you think about it --- if you're happy with, a `It's fine!' will
do. If not, I want to know why.
It's up to you now...

Subject: Metafont help
The problem I have is with printing out my LaTeX files
on my laser printer. I am using an Atari ST with an Atari
laser printer - a SLM804. I have a program (DVI2SLM)
which will produce output if it has the necessary PK (?)
files. These PK files I downloaded from our local PR1ME
in various sizes. The program does work with them but
the output is vary 'thin' - the shapes are there but they
could have more ink in them. I vaguely remember reading
on these bulletins something about Metafont and it being
used to generate the fonts - can I use it to generate
a 'darker' font.
Are there any instructions on its use available?
