Editor Peter Abbott

I apologise for the mutiple copies delivered to some subscribers last week. I
hope that all the bugs in the delivery system have no been cleared and the
problem will not occur again. I still receive a large no of error messages and
will include a list again next week.

This issue is being posted earlier than the normal midday or later.

Latest TeXhax in the Archive is #12
Latest TeXmag in the Archive is V3N3

Subject: directories for fonts

the directory you put them in depends on your TeX; your implementation
will have defined at least 4 directories

Inputs - for (La)TeX input files
Formats - for format files (eg LATEX.FMT)
Tfm - for font metric files (.TFM)
Fonts - for printer font fonts (.PK or .GF); this latter may be a
            directory hierarchy.
What these are actually called we cannot know. On a PC they might be
eg
 c:\tex\inputs
 c:\tex\formats
 c:\tex\fonts
 c:\tex\pkfonts

but who knows?

so if you take Elvish, you need to
 - copy the .tfm files to your TFM directory
 - copy the .pk files to your printer fonts directory/ies
 - load the fonts in TeX in the normal way; at its crudest
     \font\elvish=tengwar
     {\elvish This is in elvish}

  > use them. Is there a document on the archive to help with this or
  > how otherwise can I find out how
this is not really the archive's job; its up to the implementor of
your TeX to supply you with the information.

PiCTeX is a set of TeX macros for drawing pictures; it is device
independent, as it draws using TeX primitives (lines) and tiny dots.
The macros are in the Aston archive, and just get loaded into a normal
file. The manual is only available for sale from the TeX Users Group,
and is not available online. I think Peter Abbott will act as agent
for TUG in the UK and sell you a copy.

PiCTeX is very slow, and very memory-hungry. It will run on any TeX
with enough memory. With LaTeX on a PC, you might very well run out of
memory, and on a Sun, you should compile yourself a bigger TeX. But it
produces nice pictures.

I have a test copy of the web2c change files for TeX 2.993 under Unix;
I am not distributing them because I am only using them courtesy of
Karl Berry, and because they are not robust enough; it is not
currently possible to do a `make' on a Sun 4 using Sun's C compiler
and get a `trip'ped result. Using Gnu C, I have working binaries for a
Sun3, Sun4 and an HP9000.

I stress that this is not my work, so don't write and ask me for copies
yet; but the basic groundwork has been done for web2c, so doubtless it
will soon get offered out.

the TeX Users' Group publishes Michael Wichura's guide to PiCTeX
in their TeXniques series:
    The PiCTeX Manual.
     Michael J. Wichura.
     TeXniques number 6
which you can order from TUG (you are a member, i hope).
the price is in the region of US$30 -- i can't find a recent pricelist
of TUG publications. it's a slim volume but will tell you all you
need to know.

> 2) A PicTeX implementation for the IBM PC (preferably PD).

you'll have to budget for extra memory for the PC as well!
*has* anyone run PiCTeX on a PC yet?

> 3) A PicTex implementation for UN*X (Sun)

the PiCTeX macros for plain and for LaTeX are at Aston, in the
directory [TEX-ARCHIVE.PICTEX]. the macros in pictex.tex are usable
as-is with plain TeX. for LaTeX, you'll also need prepictex.tex and
postpictex.tex which avoid clashes between LaTeX and PiCTeX macros.
there's also a latexpicobjs.tex file, for using LaTeX picture objects
from plain TeX.

This is merely a bugfix version, so far as I know; existing users (if
they are happy) might like to upgrade.

UKTeX Bulletins seem to contain a mixture of queries, some
obviously meant for a general audience and others aimed specifically
at the archive support group. Would it not be better if the latter
were filtered out, or put in the bulletin with an answer? - I
presume the people closely involved with TeX support are sending
messages between themselves much more frequently than Bulletins.

Richard Hillier's plea for assistance in knowing which files to
download and where to put them on a PC to get fonts is general.
There seems a need for a file on the archive called
"new users start here", since much of the traffic in the
bulletin describes updates ... but to what?

I successfully downloaded the dvi2xx printer drivers.
dvi2lj works well with our Kyocera, but on a QMS in LJ+ mode
gave typewriter like characters which obviously did not fit
the font metric, so successive words overlapped.

The QMS does work in PostScript mode with another driver obtained
with TurboTeX (Kinch computing). Is there now any consensus on
a simple way to drive a PC PostScript printer with the PostScript
fonts?

Allan Reese.

***************************************************************************
Editor - We have discussed these ideas at previous meetings and to date have
not finalised our approach. It is on the agenda for the next meeting of the
group. (We have a small delay as one of the group is incommunicado due to jury
service).

This morning, I picked up some recently revised files from Labrea.Stanford.edu

There was an updated mf.web, correcting the bug which I reported in my Jan
11th announcement of the port of MF v1.9 to VMS. There was also a revised
version of mf84.bug, and I took the opportunity to collect the other .bug
files available at Labrea.

All these files have been placed into the archive at Aston University, as
follows:

[TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.UPDATES]CM85.BUG
[TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.UPDATES]LATEX.BUG
[TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.UPDATES]MF84.BUG
[TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.UPDATES]TEX82.BUG
[TEX-ARCHIVE.METAFONT.MFDIR.NEW]MF.WEB

(Older versions of the various .BUG files, of varying antiquity, and scattered
across different directories [some more than once] in the archive, have been
deleted.)

I have also created a full listing of the tex tree at Labrea, and this too is
available from the Aston Archive; listing created 10:45GMT 23rd January:

[TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.UPDATES]LABREA.LIS

I hope to provide an updated version of this listing at regular intervals.

Since there's only a very minor change between this latest mf.web and the
previous version (dated, at Aston, 11th Jan 1625GMT), I've also provided a
change file that can be used, BY VMS USERS ONLY, to produce the latest version
from that earlier version; just collect:

[TEX-ARCHIVE.METAFONT.MFDIR.NEW]MF.WEB_UPD

and apply EDIT/SUM MF.WEB/UPDATE=MF.WEB_UPD to activate the SUMSLP editor.

I've also revised:

[TEX-ARCHIVE.METAFONT.MFDIR.NEW.VMS]MF.CH

to match the new .WEB file; again, those who have already collected the
previous edition (dated 11th Jan at 2047GMT) can use:

[TEX-ARCHIVE.METAFONT.MFDIR.NEW.VMS]MF.CH_UPD

to save the nausea of transferring the whole of the new change file.
