The browsing service is great, thanks. Could you add some info
on transfer to the help system please? Also, I managed to use
Search to find a file, but I had to give a text string too so
I picked one I hoped would be in the file (I was lucky, it was);
is there any way to find a named file somewhere in the hierarchy
from the command line? Eg search pktogf.* in this case.

Thanks for the new service. Much appreciated.

The current version of James Clark's dvitops is installed in the Aston
UK TeX Archive. With apologies to James, whose distribution to me 3
months ago hit a black hole in my mailbox while I was on sabbatical!

Dvitops is a recommeneded, reliable, feature-laden, dvi to PostScript
driver which has support for compiling under Unix, MSDOS, Primos, VMS
and CMS. This release does not have any new features, but fixes some
problems with the operating system specifics. Those who have it
already and have no problems probably do not need to upgrade.

README file for the CyrillicGothic font

ABOUT THE FONT

CyrillicGothic is a PostScript and bitmapped font primarily for the
Macintosh intended to provide all the Cyrillic characters necessary for
general-purpose, technical, and bibliographical word-processing in all
the Slavic languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet. Visually it is
reminiscent of Helvetica - a proportionally-spaced, sans-serif font. In
addition to Cyrillic letters, it provides diacritical marks necessary
for linguistic citation of Russian, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian words.
Its encoding maps ASCII digits, and the punctuation on the digit keys,
to Cyrillic letters (and diacriticals); on the Macintosh, to get the
corresponding "normal" characters, hold down the Option key (or the
Option and Shift keys).

The font was designed by Jay Sekora (yours truly) using Fontographer
version 3.1.

ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION

This distribution is an expanded version of a previous distribution.
Changes to the PostScript include the addition of French quotation marks
and the Ukrainian hard G, and some minor adjustments to a few glyphs.
The bitmaps have been re-tuned. The most notable change is the
inclusion of .AFM and .BDF files and a non-Macintosh PostScript file,
which should make the font more useful to non-Macintosh users.

The full distribution includes:
     CyrillicGothic.sit.hqx - a BinHex'ed StuffIt file containing
          CyrilGot - a Macintosh-style Type 3 PostScript font
          CyrillicGothic.bmap - 12- and 24-point bitmaps for the
Macintosh
CyrillicGothic.tar - a Unix tar archive file containing
CyrillicGothic - a non-Macintosh version of the PostScript font
CyrillicGothic.afm - Adobe Font Metrics for the font
CyrG12.bdf - Adobe BDF file with 12-point bitmaps
CyrG24.bdf - Adobe BDF file with 24-point bitmaps

Subject: dvips: addition to UK TeX Archive

The current version of Tom Rokicki's dvips is now installed in the Aston
UK TeX Archive. This is version 5.46.

dvips compiles under Unix, VMS and MSDOS, and is probably the richest
dvi to PS program available in the public domain. There have been
*many* changes and enhancements since the version that was at Aston,
anyone with a version less than 5.4 should upgrade.

If you want convincing that this a good driver, get hold of the manual

Subject: Updates to Mainz extensions to LaTeX

The five packages released by Mittelbach and Schoepf as part of the
work for a new LaTeX have been upgraded in the UK TeX Archive. The
latst update for most of the files is around November 1990.

They are stored in the following directories:

 [tex-archive.latex.styles.multicol]
 [tex-archive.latex.styles.fontsel]
 [tex-archive.latex.styles.array]
 [tex-archive.latex.styles.verbatim]
 [tex-archive.latex.styles.theorem]

These are not radical updates, so existing users need not panic.

Anyone who has not investigated this stuff is missing a treat, in my
opinion.

Subject: VAX/VMS Contributions to the UK TeX Archive

The archivists will shortly be making an announcement about supported
formats in which contributions to the archive would be preferred.
However, I'd just like to drop a hint to contributors using VAX/VMS
machines.

We've already had one contribution consisting of a number of files all
packaged together in a VMS BACKUP saveset; this is an ideal method for
transfer, because it can preserve any original directory structure _and_
the original file creation dates. When the contribution is transferred
to the archive, it will, of course, be expanded into its separate files.

But please note that BACKUP's /INTERCHANGE qualifier should be used when
creating such a saveset, so that any original file protection mechanisms
(UIC- or ACL-based) don't propagate into the archive. Naturally, such
a saveset should be transmitted to UK.AC.TEX using TRANSFER/CODE=FAST.

I wanted to add a black border to pages, but I wanted to avoid printer

Let me know if it breaks. Criticism on the code is welcome. Ideas on how to

desired. The user interface follows the OpenLook style.

Three menu buttons contain most of the command functions:

FILE: functions for loading and saving bib files.

EDIT: Delete - deletes the currently shown bib entry.
Add - adds a new empty bib entry.
Undo - reverts any changes to the current entry.

VIEW: Next/Previous - for showing sequential bib entries.
List - pops up a scrollable list of all cite keys in

		 sorted alphabetically.
Find - pops up a dialog box for entering a search
		 string for any field.
Annotation - shows a window that displays the

Abbreviation - shows a window that displays the
@STRING entries. Users will be able to
modify and add new abbreviations, but
must have some knowledge of BiBTeX syntax.

If help is installed, information about each BiBTeX field is available
   through the OpenWindow help facility.

Bibcard requires the XView 2.0 libraries distributed either by SUN or

This is version 1.1 of my chessfonts (chess10, chess20, chess30 and
chessfig10) for typesetting chess with LaTeX and/or TeX. This new version
contains improved fonts, a chess style file (chess.sty) complete with
documentation. The documentation is the LaTeX version of the article as it
will appear in TUGboat and the complete game Fisher played against Tal in
the Candidates Tournament of 1959 (from the book `My 60 memorable games',
Bobby Fisher). It also contains an example of `Schaakmaatje' (the chess
magazine of my chessclub Schaakclub Geldrop). This Schaakmaatje (in Dutch)
contains a chess challenge (schaaktest). It is one of the games Max Euwe
played agains Bobby Fisher. The challenge consists of finding the best moves
for White. The number of points you earn, gives an impression of your
playing strength. It can also serve as a start to create a magazine for your
chess club with LaTeX.

Have a lot of chess writing and playing fun!

Subject: Forthcoming UK TeX Users Group Meetings

Positively the last announcement(s)! The legend grows!

               The UK \TeX\ Users Group

           Announcement of a Forthcoming Meeting:

                 \TeX\ and \LaTeX\ evolve

held on Wednesday 13th February 1991
at The Royal Institution of Great Britain, London, U.K.

SPEAKERS
The speakers will be Frank Mittelbach, Rainer Sch\"opf,
Dominik Wujastyk, and a panel of handpicked gourous.

MEETING DETAILS
The meeting will be held in the Bernard Sunley Lecture Theatre, The
Royal Instution of Great Britain, 21 Albemarle Street,
London W1. It will commence at 10.00 am, with registration
and coffee from 9.30 o'clock. There will be breaks for
lunch and tea -- it is expected that the meeting will
finish around 4.30 pm. There will be a charge for the
meeting of \quid25 for members of the UK \TeX\ users group,
and \quid35 for non-members. A booking form is provided.

MEETING OUTLINE
This meeting is organised around the visit to London of
Frank Mittelbach \& Rainer Sch\"opf, well-known for their
many articles in TUGboat. They have contributed some fairly
major enhancements to the present \LaTeX. They will present
this material, concentrating on the {\bf doc-option} and
{\bf multicolumn style}. They have also implemented an {\bf
orthogonal font selection} scheme for both \TeX\ and
\LaTeX, and will also present the key issues involved in
this. This provides a rare opportunity to hear two of the
most active innovators in the real world of \TeX\ and
\LaTeX.

Frank has also been very concerned with examining what
{\bf extensions} are still required to \TeX\ to make it
suitable for the needs of the 90's and into the next
century: \TeX3 is just not enough!

Another area of current concern is that of {\bf virtual} or
{\bf composite fonts}. Although these were announced with
\TeX3, they are not particularly related. Dominik Wujastyk
will shed some light on them and reveal just what they are,
and why you might want them.

Among the highlights of the meeting will be an
opportunity to put questions to some of the foremost \TeX\
practitioners in Europe. Intended as a `guru' session,
rather than yet another forum at which to ask `where do I
get \TeX\ for a Sinclair Z8?', `\TeX xers' Question Time' is
{\bf the} opportunity of 1991 at which to seek expert
guidance on difficult areas of \TeX\ and \LaTeX. In order
to give the experts a fighting chance, live questions will
be intermixed with problems notified to the panel in
advance.

If you would like to ask a question, and are willing to
submit it in advance, please send it (via e-mail) to {\tt
P.Taylor@Uk.Ac.Rhbnc.Vax}. The e-mail free may send their
query via disk, fax, or the legendary paper mail to Malcolm
Clark at the address below. Questions which are capable of
being answered in five minutes or less are more likely to
be put to the panel than those requiring half an
hour\dots\ Live questions will, of course, be welcomed,
and indeed it is hoped that some questions or answers will
themselves inspire further spontaneous discussion. The
membership of the panel is not yet certain, but it is hoped
that we will be able to entice such notables as Frank
Mittelbach, Chris Rowley, Dominik Wujastyk and Rainer
Sch\"opf.

Park (Piccadilly, Jubilee and Victoria Tube lines), but
Piccadilly Circus station itself (Piccadilly and Bakerloo
lines) is also within reasonable walking distance.

By car:
Bad move. Drive as far as one of the outlying BR or
Underground stations and continue your journey by public
transport.

By bus:
Yes, there's lots of buses around, and lots of them
seem to trundle along Piccadilly. Good luck.

Numbers for the workshop will be limited to about 20. Members
will of course be given preference. A booking form is provided
with this flyer.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE
This workshop is organised around the visit to London of Frank
Mittelbach \& Rainer Sch\"opf. Frank and Rainer have
contributed some fairly major enhancements to the present
\LaTeX. The workshop is restricted in numbers, and is purposely
{\bf not} for the faint hearted. It is {\bf not} a tutorial:
the emphasis is on `work'. Positive, constructive contributions
from the participants are a prerequisite. Don't come to this
workshop to find out what \LaTeX3 has in it! Come along to find
out how {\bf you} can help to make it a reality!

DIRECTIONS
By tube:
The nearest tube station to Parsifal is Finchley Road (Jubilee
and Metropolitan Tube lines). It is a fair walk up hill to
Parsifal College (on the corner of Parsifal Road): say 10
minutes if you are a fast walker. Any bus going north along
Finchley road will get you there. The routes which pass
Parsifal include 13, 82 and 113.

By car:
There is uncontrolled (i.e.~no meters or such nasties) street
parking available in the immediate area of the college. It is a
residential area, but provided you are inventive and patient,
you should find somewhere to park.

By bus:
Yes, there's lots of buses around, and lots of them seem to trundle up and
down the Finchley Road. They include the 13, 82 and 113. Good
luck.

By rail:
Both the North London Link and Thameslink have (separate)
stations at West Hampstead. The walk from these stations to
Parsifal takes about quarter of an hour. Buses going North from
West Hampstead (routes C11 and 28) will take you near to the
Fortune Green Road end of Parsifal Road. Parsifal Road runs
between Finchley Road and Fortune Green Road.

When you log in to the PUBLIC account at Uk.Ac.TeX, the following is
displayed:

I hope to produce a suitably curtailed version of the HELP information
in the near future, but it will probably be a long job!

Bowing to popular demand, I've reinstated the VMS BACKUP command to the
command tables used by the browsing account; this means that sites
running VMS can create a save set of a subset of the archive locally, and
then transfer it back to their own machine, thus preserving creation
dates and directory structure. At some time in the future, we hope to
be able to add a Unix-like `tar' utility to perform the same function
for sites running Unix.

PLEASE DON'T try to produce a backup of the whole archive; firstly
there's only a restricted disk quota in the PUBLIC account for the save
set, and secondly transferring such a save set would take 133 HOURS!

But one could BACKUP a subset of the archive; move (using SET DEFAULT or
cd) to the appropriate part of the directory tree, and then say:
    BACKUP/VERIFY [...]*.* SYS$SCRATCH:TEMP.BCK/SAVE_SET
(or whatever filename you desire for the save set). Each site utilizing
the PUBLIC account has its own separate SYS$SCRATCH area on the disk.
Note also that BACKUP has /INTERCHANGE enabled by default.

Then transfer the save set back to your own site:
    TRANSFER/CODE=FAST SYS$SCRATCH:TEMP.BCK /DELETE <yoursite>::<yourfile>
(Please use the /DELETE qualifier so that the temporary file gets
deleted after the transfer has completed, thus leaving room for other
users of the service!)

Subject: dvips version 5.47

Rokicki's dvips changes at a bewildering rate. The version in the
Aston UK TeX Archive as of 1 Feb 91 is version 5.47. If you haven't
had any problems with 5.4? then there's no hurry to upgrade - this is
a bug fix.
