Dr Abbott,
	I have been given your name as a possible source of help with
a problem I have with the document preparation system LATEX. If you
are unable to help then please accept my apologies for bothering you.
	I am trying to use LATEX with a postscript printer and include
encapsulated postscript graph files. Unfortunately our system here at
the Meteorological Research Flight does not have the necessary DVI2PS
command files and associated sub-directories. I would much appreciate
it if you could let me know where I can acquire the necessary files
which will need to run in VAX VMS.
	Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from you.
My e-mail address (which sometimes works) is

		CBS%OX.ATM.ISAMS::"HOOKE::ICARUS::TAYLOR"

If that route fails then a fax on 0252 376588 would be very helpful.

Yours sincerely

Subject: Literate programming in C

Dear Archivists,

once upon a time I read an article (in TUGBoat ??) about a set of
(La)TeX-macros and a C programming disciplin, which allows a form of literate
programming in C. I.e. either you put your source through a C-compiler
to obtain a program, or you feed the source into TeX, which will convert
your C-program into a nicely formatted document -- formatting your
C program fragments and all comment, which have to be written in a certain
style.

Alas, I am not able to find that article again. Is there somebody out
there who can help me to trace that article and/or to locate the respective
TeX/LaTeX option style files in the archive?

Thanks

This is a common problem which can be easily solved via a style file option
named fancyheadings.sty. The fancyheadings options allow you to include
three part headers and footers (spanning multiple lines if you wish), as
well as rules below headers and above footers if you wish. Also, it allows
you to define how you want LaTeX to handle \thispagestyle{plain} in your
document. This is quite possibly the single most useful style option
available for customization of your output. Alternately, a similar (but
slightly more limited) style option file named headerfooter.sty will do a
somewhat parallel job. Both work for all major styles I have come across.

These files are available from just about every archive I am aware of and I
am sure that they are available from TeXServer@TeX.ac.uk (don't know where;
hopefully one of the people responsible for the very fine UKTeX Digest and
Aston archives will append something below this about TeXServer
availability). I will point out that they are also available via e-mail by
including the commands:
 SENDME STY.FANCYHEADINGS
 SENDME STY.HEADERFOOTER
on separate lines in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET
(FILESERV@SHSU.edu). For more information about FILESERV, include the
command HELP on its own line in the body of your mail message to it.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly.

Thanks for the table Phil, I was the asking member.
What does it actually mean? Are these printings/dates the threshold beyond
which the books reflect V3? They look more like just the current printings
as I think it was the 18th spiral bound TeXbook that had the changes in.
Or do we just assume that as all the dates are in 1991, after the changes were
made, then the books will automatically be up to date?

I recommend you get Piet van Oostrum's `fancyheadings.sty' LaTeX style
option, which offers a flexible and well-explained system for headers
and footers. Its at Aston.

Use fancyheadings.sty. If you can't get it from Aston, get it from us.

How to get fancyheadings.doc and fancyheadings.sty from the archive at
	Dept. of Computer Science, Utrecht University:

NOTE: In the following I have assumed your mail address is john@highbrow.edu.

    Of course you must substitute your own address for this. This should be
    a valid internet or uucp address. For bitnet users name@host.BITNET
    usually works.

by FTP: (please restrict access to weekends or evening/night (i.e. between
about 20.00 and 0900 UTC).

    ftp archive.cs.ruu.nl [131.211.80.5]
    user name: anonymous or ftp
    password: your own email address (e.g. john@highbrow.edu)
      Don't forget to set binary mode if the file is a tar/arc/zoo archive,
      compressed or in any other way contains binary data.
    get TEX/latexstyle/fancyheadings.doc
    get TEX/latexstyle/fancyheadings.sty

by mail-server:

send the following message to
mail-server@cs.ruu.nl (or uunet!mcsun!hp4nl!ruuinf!mail-server):

    begin
    path john@highbrow.edu (PLEASE SUBSTITUTE *YOUR* ADDRESS)
    send TEX/latexstyle/fancyheadings.doc
    send TEX/latexstyle/fancyheadings.sty
    end

NOTE: *** PLEASE USE VALID INTERNET ADDRESSES IF POSSIBLE. DO NOT USE
ADDRESSES WITH ! and @ MIXED !!!! BITNETTERS USE USER@HOST.BITNET ***

The path command can be deleted if we receive a valid from address in your
message. If this is the first time you use our mail server, we suggest you
first issue the request:

Subject: Re: Headers in LaTeX

Ian from East Anglia writes:

==============================

Having read section C.4.2 (p161-162) of the LaTeX book several
times, I am still totally confused about do-it-yourself headers.

What I want is a page, with no numbers, and a single, centred
header on each page. This header is the title of the paper.

...

Also, is there anyway to get BOTH a header and a footer in LaTeX? Or
is this such a crime against good taste and style that it is
impossible? (I dont want to do it - just curious)

==============================

I have had the same difficulty and though, not being a true LaTeXpert,
I had the courage to dig around the style files. The answer to Ian's
question is in the following extract from article.sty (re-formated by me):

\def\ps@myheadings{
   \def\@oddhead{\hbox{}\sl\rightmark \hfil\rm\thepage}
   \def\@oddfoot{}
   \def\@evenhead{\rm \thepage\hfil\sl\leftmark\hbox{}}
   \def\@evenfoot{}
   \def\sectionmark##1{}
   \def\subsectionmark##1{}
}

All LaTeX lets you do via myheadings lets you do is to define \rightmark
and \leftmark, but LaTeX knows best, so it MUST be accompanied by a
page number! The solution is easy. create a new style file, say,
mymyhead.sty with the above definitions suitably modified (note you can
add footers too!). A true LaTeXie would change \ps@myheadings to,
say, \ps@mymyhead. Also, since it's obvious you're going to use this,
you might as well do so within the style file, i.e., at to the end (outside the
definging group)

\ps@mymyhead

Then invoke as, eg., \documentstyle[mymyhead]{article}. Note that you
don't need to bother with \rightmark, etc., as you can hard-wire in anything
you need right in the definition.

There may be more elegant solutions, and there may be those who would
say that you shouldn't fool around hacking like this, but I am only interested,
like Ian, in getting the job done the way I want it done!

Yes, get EMTeX from the Aston TeX Archive, in
    [tex-archive.tex.ms-dos.emtex]
The file 00files.txt in that directory contains a list of the 73 files

I am interested in using TeX for typesetting my papers, books and teaching
notes. But my needs are rather special. I wrote to Mr Chris Rowley. He
did reply to my letter but he did not have the information I need. He also
sent me a copy of the Baskerville and a membership application form. It
was from the Baskerville that I found your name and address. Since I do
not live far from Aston, I can easily come to your department and talk to
some expert. Briefly, my needs are related to my academic training and
present job. I am a linguist and at present I teach Asian languages,
translation and interpretation and multi-lingual wordprocessing in Bilston
Community College, Wolverhampton. I need to print International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA) symbols as well as in Asian languages like Hindi, Panjebi,
Gujareti and Bengali. All these scripts are left-to-right scripts like the
European scripts. But there as so many combinations of letters and
`accents' that the combinations cannot be created as conjunct letters like
the German umlaut characters. An example is the combination of -- and --
which appears as -- or that of -- and -- as --. I do not think anyone has
created -- fonts for use with TeX. But I am prepared to learn to use
METAFONT if it is technically capable of designing screen and printer fonts
for IPA and --- scripts.

I shall be grateful if you let me know whether METAFONT and TeX have got
anything for me. If they have, I can visit your department in Aston to
learn about details.

My college telephone is 0902 353929 (ext 145) or 0902 353877 (ext 220).

University of Washington in Seattle, Washington

Washington State University in Pullman, Washington
George Washington University in Washington, District of Columbia
Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia
Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland

If I have left out anyone, I don't want to hear about it. The first is
the site of the TeX archives in question. It also has a library that
looks as though someone has misplaced a cathedral (no spire, however).

I have released version 0.8 of modes.mf. You can get it by anonymous ftp from

You can also get it by email from George Greenwade's (thanks, George!)
file server if you cannot ftp: mail fileserv@shsu.edu with a body of
`sendme modes'. It is about 42K.

This file is a collection of Metafont mode_def's (probably close to all
of them in existence). It also makes common definitions for write-white
printers and `special' information.

This version has several changes:
* new modes (for IBM, Epson, and other devices)
* better values for the SparcPrinter, Printware 720IQ devices
* CanonSX is no longer claimed to be write-white
* mode_setup can be safely called more than once for write-white devices

If you have mode_def's which are not listed below, or corrections to the
existing ones, please send them to me.

In particular, I would also appreciate getting definitive information on
the Linotronic printers. (Notes in the file reflect the current state
of confusion.)

Subject: AMSFonts for Textures posted to e-MATH

In response to several requests, we have posted the Macintosh version of
the AMSFonts for use with Textures to e-MATH.ams.com. These fonts are
stored as as BinHex'd StuffIt archives in the directory /ams/macintosh.
For convenience, the AMS-LaTeX 1.1 and AMS-TeX 2.1 distributions are also
stored in this same manner in the same directory.

As always, please let us know if anyone finds problems with any of these
files.  Thanks.
