Subject: Executable form of dvips program

I would like to obtain an executable version of any dvi to postscript
program to run on a Vax/VMS 3600 computer. In the archive I can find C code
for at least one such program but no executable. The problem is that I have
no C compiler on my machine. Is there an executable available ?

When will AMSTeX 2.1 be available at the Aston archive, together with the

I have seen some stuff in the mail about RTF manipulation tools but they
only seem to deal with troff<->RTF interchange. Does anyone know about any
RTF<->(La)TeX interworking tools?

This came up on comp.text.tex as while back; I'm fetching the file for
installation at Aston.

Subject: RTF to TeX filter (at last!)
  Newsgroups: comp.text.tex

I have finally got my filter to a semi-releasable state. It is based on
Paul DuBois's rtf reader, and he is going to put the following note in his
RTF directory until it gets shaken down:

  -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Robert Lupton (rhl@astro.princeton.edu) has an RTF -- TeX reader based
on Paul DuBois's RTF reader that you see before you. Eventually it
will be added to his RTF distribution, but while it is undergoing fast
evolution after it's initial release you will need to get it
  separately.

It is available by anonymous ftp from
  astro.princeton.edu (128.112.24.1)
The file that you want is
  pub/rtf2TeX.tar.Z

If you have problems, or enhancements, please send them to Robert
  -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

  The distribution README files reads:

This is a first attempt at an RTF to TeX converter. The parts that
handle fonts and such like seem to work pretty well, although they
could be improved, but the table handling is a problem. I had a good
deal of trouble trying to figure out what particular rtf control codes
were supposed to do; this makes it hard to convert them into TeX.

I have tried to produce good TeX, but this is not easy due to the
sloppy way that many RTF writers generate redundant font and other
  changes.

Many things are not handled at all, more due to my lacking motivation
than to their intrinsic difficulty. For example, I don't support
double columns, but it would be easy enough to do (I'd generate a
control sequence to do it, and add the TeX code required to the
TeX_defs file. I even have the TeX somewhere...).

You will probably usually want to use the -i flag to include some
  needed TeX definitions:
  rtf2TeX -i TeX_defs.tex file.rtf > file.tex
I am interested in opinions on whether this is a good way to do things,
as well as enhancements to the TeX macros.

I would be interested in seeing bug reports, and (especially) patches
and enhancements. I don't envisage being able to spend much more time
on this project, but I will be able to maintain a version as it improves
under the efforts of the internet.

Mike Piff asked (a while ago, I admit):

   Am I supposed to type

   \define@mathgroup\mv@normal3{cmex}{m}{n}

after \input ing latex.tex with the new font loading scheme?

Supposed? No. But you may if you want :-)

There is a major problem with the cmex10 "font" here. cmex10 is not a
font, it's a collection of a lot of different math-related glyphs. Let
me give some examples of what I mean:

The large operators like \sum and \int come in two sizes, one for
\textstyle, one for \displaystyle. Whereas the former should scale
with the size of the text fonts, this is less clear for the latter.
I'd even say that the large operators in \displaystyle from a 20%
magnified cmex10 are too large.

Another problem are large delimiters: if you scale cmex10 linearly,
the \fontdimen and related parameters get values which are not
pleasing to the eye (I'm talking here about things like
\delimitershortfall).

In short: IMHO a linear scaling of cmex10 will look worse than
changing nothing. I see two possible solutions: Either design a real
cmex11, cmex12, ..., or (preferably) do a complete redesign of the TeX
math fonts to sort out the relations. A part of this is necessary
anyway, as we need new math fonts to work with the 256-character text
fonts.

I just came across the following message on the TeX USENET newsgroup,
and thought it worth forwarding to the entire archivegroup.

While the PStoPK program will undoubtedly be proprietary, its output
surely will not, and this might be a useful way of getting PK files of
PS fonts for previewing.

Yes - The current version of AmigaTeX comes with a pstopk utility that
converts postscript fonts to pk ones, so it can definately be done.

Note that it doesn't do postscript to metafont though..

Subject: Principal value integrals

Does any of the standard fonts contain the symbol for the Cauchy principal valu
e integral - i.e. integral sign with a short horizontal stroke across the middl
e?
If not, is there a way of building it out of the plain integral sign in such a
way that the new control sequence can be used in the same way as \int, i.e. in
all sizes and with limits appearing in the same places?
