Subject: Tree-TeX and friends

I have been asked to locate a program (a TeX program would be ideal) which
will process, transform and print the results of cladistics analysis for plants
and birds. The data will represent a tree, with typically 12 levels and circa
200 terminal nodes. Questions: (1) Is this something for which Anne
Brugeman-Klein's `Tree-TeX' is well suited? (2) If so, where is it documented,
and where does it live? (3) If not, or perhaps even if, are there other
programs which I should consider?

                                        * Phil.

P.S. It will not be necessary to label all non-terminal nodes; typically,
only one non-terminal level will need to be labelled.

Subject: INCLUDE Preprocessor available on FILESERV/Niord

There has been some recent discussion about an \include or \input
preprocessor for (La)TeX. Charles Franklin forwarded me his package for
doing this, which is now available from FILESERV/Niord. Below is the
FILESERV description file for the package. Thanks to Charles for
contributing this to the TeX community and for allowing us to distribute
it.

                                 -------
The INCLUDE package includes a uuencoded .ZIP file including the Pascal
source, executable, and documentation for Charles H. Franklin's
<C38871CF@WUVMD.BITNET> INCLUDE utility (v1.5). This program replaces
LaTeX "\include{myfile}" and "\input{myfile}" statements with the actual
contents of the included file. "Inputfile", "outputfile" and "myfile"s are
assumed to have extension ".tex" if none is given. If no "outputfile" is
given, the output is written on "included.tex".

"Inputfile" can be a TeX file or it can be a simple list of \include (or
\input) statements. Included files may themselves contain \include or
\input statements. This nesting can be up to 14 files deep. No file may
include a file in which it is itself already included. To do so would
cause an infinite loop.

Charles notes in his contribution:
> I've been using INCLUDE for about a year and it works fine for me.
> However, no one else has tried it, so I expect to get bug reports from
> those who try it.

To retrieve INCLUDE, please include the command:
 SENDME INCLUDE
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET (FILESERV@SHSU.edu).
For anonymous ftp retrieval, the file is in the [.INCLUDE] directory on
Niord.SHSU.edu (192.92.115.8).

I have made some changes to my `rotating' package (in UK TeX Archive
in [.latex.contrib.rotating], viz
 - fixed a type which stopped the documentation printing without a TeX
   error :-}
 - *finally* made the `sidewaysfigure' environment work; this gives
you a new type of float where both the figure and the caption are
rotated together through 90 degrees. thanks are due to the
never-failing deus ex machina, Rainer Sch\"opf, for suggesting the
tiny fixes which made the difference.

Subject: TeX v3.141 now in the Aston Archive

Don Knuth has just announced the release of revised versions of TeX and
many of its friends and relations. These will all be installed on the
Aston Archive over the next few days/weeks; as a start, the file
[tex-archive.tex]tex.web is now the source of this latest revision, at
v3.141. The change file for the VMS implementation will be found as
[tex-archive.tex.vms]tex.ch.

The previous two versions of the TeX source remain (for the time being)
as [tex-archive.tex]tex.web-3-1 and [tex-archive.tex]tex.web-3-14; they
may be deleted at some time in the future after change files for all
other implemenations have been installed in the archive.

[Note for fellow archivists (and anyone else that's interested):
I have followed a new practice on this occasion --- the timestamp of
the tex.web source has been manually edited to match that of the
canonical source file at Labrea --- since the latter is timed at 05:10
local (presumably PST) on the 16th March, the Aston copy is timed at
13:10 GMT on the same day.

I would strongly advocate that all other archives attempt to follow
this practice: it helps both ourselves and our clients --- it would be
even better if an FTP directory listing could be obtained with a fixed
  time datum, such as GMT!

A note for Unix users - Karl Berry is preparing a new release of his
web2c system anyway, and TeX 3.141 will be included in that. So
interim Unix changefiles are unlikely to be added to the archive. Karl
will release his stuff soon

Additions to UK TeX Archive

We have added a miscellany of items to the Uk TeX Archive. Some are
recent, some are just us catching up with other archives. Apologies
for the length and simultaneous brevity all of this, but life is too
short to catalogue them all properly.

People *should* take note of the PSFIG, TUGBOAT and CMFONTS entries
Short shrift will be given by the authors to people who report
problems with older versions of these packages.

Users will no doubt report experiences.

Sebastian Rahtz

*****************************************************
CMFONTS: [tex-archive.fonts.cmfonts]*.mf

This is the March 16th release of the Metafont source of all the CM
fonts. Donald Knuth has made some changes, and recommends that people
regenerate all the fonts. To be honest, individuals shouldn't need to
bother - but if you use CMR for production, you'd better do it.

PSFIG 1.9: [TEX-ARCHIVE.PSFIG] (and subdirectories)
            also [.src.unix-archives]psfig.tarz_uue

   NEW IN VERSION 1.9

Version 1.9 fixes allows magfication and works with amstex.

New features in version 1.8 include better rotation ability
(\psfig{...,rotate=100}) and support for including compressed figures
   (use the included "pscompress" script).

CROPMARKS: [.tex-style]cropmark.tex

   From: eijkhout@cs.utk.edu (Victor Eijkhout)
A while ago someone posted a cropmarks style on this group.
I was quite disappointed that this relied on the format that
was being used. Quite unnecessary, if you ask me.

   Hence the following little ditty...

It has been tested to a moderate extent, but please report
   bugs and suggestions.

CIRTH FONTS: [tex-archive.fonts.cirth]
        CIRTH.MF Standard cirth font
        CIRBF.MF Boldface cirth font
        CIRSL.MF Slanted cirth font
        CIRSS.MF Sans-serif cirth font

        MACROS.MF Macro file
        RUNES.MF Letter definition file
        LIGS.MF Ligature table file

        CIRTH.TEX Latex file showing use
NUM.TEX La/TeX macros for using fonts
        README This file

Find out from your local guru what settings to use for
running Metafont and where to install the fonts. On my PC for my
       HP laserjet printer I use
        mf &plain \mode=hplaser; mag=1; input cirth

For the other fonts just substitute cirbf (say) for cirth. For
more information on its use see cirth.tex.
Comments and suggestions gratefully received. I have a germanic
rune font as well for rune enthusiasts. For Tolkien
enthusiasts there is a commonly available tengwar script font.
I have a modification of this giving roman letters. For the
truly wierd I am working on a cuneiform font two (64 letters
        done, 2946 to go!).

SAUTER: [.TEX-ARCHIVE.FONTS.SAUTER]

   Karl Berry writes:
've again updated my packaging for Unix of John Sauter's Metafont files
to make Computer Modern fonts at any point size.

This version (1.2) puts in the bold-math.mf file that I somehow left out
last time. It also adds two files to make the LaTeX symbol and
bold symbol fonts, contributed by Friedrich Haubensak,
   hsk@infko.uni-koblenz.de.

For all of the standard Computer Modern fonts, these files produce the
same TFM files as Knuth's sources. So it is ok to call the output from
   these `cm...'.

The distribution includes an lfonts.tex for LaTeX and a MakeTeXPK for
dvips which take advantage of these fonts.

TUGBOAT: [TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.TUGBOAT]

all the style files (plain and latex) for tugboat and the tug
meeting proceedings (a variation on the tugboat style), as well
as author guidelines for the use of both, have been upgraded and
installed on most of the major archives.

   the following files are involved:

       ltugboat.sty (latex style -- tugboat)
       ltugproc.sty (latex style -- proceedings)
tugboat.cmn (macros common to plain and latex styles)
       tugboat.sty (plain style -- tugboat)
       tugproc.sty (plain style -- proceedings)
       guidepro.tex (proceedings guidelines)
       tubguide.tex (tugboat author guidelines)

the current (14 Jan 92) distribution of the LaTeX files.

DCOLUMN: [.latex.contrib]dcolumn.sty

A fairly general mechanism for specifying columns to be aligned on
       a `decimal point' is defined.

This style requires my newarray.sty and Mittelbach's array.sty.

TABULARX: [.latex.contrib]tabularx.sty

 \begin{tabularx}{final width}{tabular-preamble}
   tabular body
 \end{tabularx}

In the {tabular-preamble} argument, X should be used to denote a column
that gets the final specification of p{<whatever width is needed>}.

 So for example
    \begin{tabularx}{250pt}{|cXcX|}
        ...
    \end{tabularx}
 is equivalent to
    \begin{tabular*}{250pt}{|cp{??}cp{??}|}
       ...
    \end{tabular*}
where the ?? is chosen automatically.

This style requires my newarray.sty, and Mittelbach's array.sty.

DECALIGN: [.latex.contrib]decalign.sty, decalign.readme
A problem occurs in TEX and LATEX when you try to align columns in
a table on the decimal point (or any other character). There is
now a document style option in LATEX called `decalign', which adds
a new column specifier to the tabular and array environments. Use
a `d' to indicate that a column should contain entries aligned on
the decimal point. An optional character after the `d' indicates
the character to be used as the separator; the default is a
   period. Stephen Meatheringham 1987

BIBUNITS: [.latex.contrib]bibunits.sty

BIBUNITS is a style to generate separate bibliographies for
different units (parts) of the text (currently only one of
chapters, sections or bibunit-environments). The style will
separate the citations of each unit of text into a separate file to
be processed by bibtex. The global bibliography section produced by
LATEX also can appear in the document and citations can be placed
in both at the same time. by Jose Alberto <alberto@cs.umd.edu>
