which dvidot is this? if it is the one which came with emTeX, it will
not use PXL files, only PK ones

 > i cannot use the font libaries, or unpack them

if you do not have the `fontlib' utility which is part of emtex, then
you cannot unpack the libraries. it is contrary to the conditions of
distribution to give you just bits of emTeX (like dvidot), so complain
to your source!

how dvidot searches for font files, how to set up configuration files,
libraries, directory hierarchies etc are all explained in the dvidrv
manual which is part of emTeX. it *is* a bit heavy reading, but there
is really no alternative. any canned explanation over email would come
down to `it all depends'

Hi,

I got EmTeX, Virtual fonts (and the corresponding *.tfm files) and Dvips32.
Dvips32 works fine with cmr fonts (again from EmTeX), but does not
seem capable of using VF's. Where can I find some documentation on using
virtual fonts?

if your copy of dvips does not find the virtual fonts, then it is
simply a matter of paths in the configuration file `config.ps' being
set wrongly. Use the debug options (-d nnn where nnn is a number
specifying what you want to trace) in dvips to see where your program
is searching. dvips is an excellent driver which supports virtual
fonts to the hilt. how to use them is another matter... the dvips
manual has a section on it, for starters

I believe that the best previewer available for suns is DVIPAGE by N.Hunt.
It is on the Aston archive (uk.ac.tex) in directory
[tex-archive.drivers.dvipage] On our machines (sun3/60, sun-os3.5, 19"mono)
the times are: startup about 10 sec; display new page 1 sec, and the display
is legible without having to use magnifiers. It should be faster on a sparc.
The disadvantage is that it uses suntools not X windows.

I have a problem with dvipage; with the current default mono resolution
declared at 120 dots per inch, you cannot quite get a whole page on screen
at once. I wanted to try using 100 dots/inch to see if it is still legible.
Please does anybody have a suite of font files at 100dpi available for FTP?
Thank you, mark

The latest version of LaTeX seems to have some bugs in the style files.
I have not had time to check all of them, but here is an example.

   In BOOK.STY, we find

   \def\theindex{\@restonecoltrue\if@twocolumn\@restonecolfalse\fi
   \columnseprule \z@
   \columnsep 35\p@\twocolumn[\@makeschapterhead{\indexname}]%

       \thispagestyle{plain}\parindent\z@
       \parskip\z@ plus .3\p@\relax\let\item\@idxitem}

Now, because of the way \uppercase operates, \uppercase{\cs} just gives
\cs again, without any change, and so the index is headed Index and not INDE
X.

a) It *is* headed INDEX and *not* Index. (Proof by empirical test.)

b) You're analysis is wrong since the \@mkboth's arguments are
expanded when they are put into the \mark nodes, and thus
\uppercase{Index} is put into them which gives the desired result.

That is, even though I've defined the default roman to be cmss, this
gets reset to cmr by \begin{document}. The reason is that \document
calls \@normalsize, which calls \@setsize, which includes:

      \fontfamily \default@family

and \default@family is defined to be cmr. Thus, setting \rmdefault
and calling \rm is not enough to set the default roman. To get round
this, my document styles redefine \default@family:

      \def\default@family{\rmdefault}

Shouldn't this be the defintion in fontdef.*?

No, since \default@family is used to find the last resort when the
font selection scheme doesn't find a font.

Also, if you use newlfont.sty, \@setsize does not switch to

      \fontfamily \default@family

After various tests to find a solution (without success) I complained to

Subject: using postscript in LaTeX

I use LaTeX within a Unix environment, and use dvitps as
the dvi file to postscript file converter.
I have a postscript file (which originated in MacDraw)
which has a picture in the centre of it (it's actually the
university crest). I would like to be able to include the
picture, but not the whole page, in a LaTeX document, and
know how to position it, (left, right, or centered), as I
may want to use it on the front page of a report
(centered), or as part of a user-defined letter head (left
or right, depending on my mood!).

Does anyone know how I can do this?

Also, does anyone know about the TeX users group, and how I
can join? I also believe this query will get put onto a
weekly bulletin; how do I get hold of this?

Thanks very much in advance,

You first want to change any `translate' commands or `move' commands so that
the image comes out in the bottom left hand corner of the page. Then remove
any `showpage' command.

You should then be able to include it with a suitable \special{} command
such as:

\makebox[WIDTH]{\vbox to HEIGHT{\vfill \special{psfile=FILE}}}

where WIDTH and HEIGHT are the width and height of the image including units
and FILE is the name of the file.

I'm biased, but if were you i would switch to dvips, which has better
support

it depends on your driver how you include PS figures. dvips, dvitops,
dvitps, dvi2ps etc all have different conventions. There are two
generalized schemes, psfig and boxedepsf (both can be got from the UK
TeX Archive), which try to present a uniform interface. Personally, I
used psfig, and say something like
  \psfig{figure=foo.ps,width=1.5in}

This produces (in TeX terms, a vbox, which you can position how you
like, eg
 \centerline{\psfig{figure=foo.ps,width=1.5in}}
to solve your layout questions.

If you have never fixed this before, you have a nasty coming. viz the
mangy PostScript produced by many Mac programs, like Macdraw. You may
have problems with having to include a Mac header file. Have fun, then
go and buy a copy of Adobe Illustrator ...

i leave this to another archivist; you will get added to the list.

**********************
Using PS fonts on PC.

Thanks to SPQR for good advice and for making the new dvips (5.482)
available. The afm2tfm obtained with dvips last July still won't
run on my PCs (two makes tried) under DOS 5 (significant?) even
after recompiling. But it did compile and run on a Unix machine.
The afm2tfm with the new dvips is half the size (!) and runs
without a hitch. The latest dvips has a much expanded document
file and fully explains and supports A3 and other paper sizes.

However, it still took a few tries to implement the Adobe font,
so I've noted what I found difficult to spot in the document.

Adobe provide font disk with .pfb (binary version), .afm and .inf
(info - of use for hinting?). Out of date dvips versions won't accept
the binary .pfb. I had dvips V5.395 obtained with emTeX last July.
V5.482 is now in the archive. The dvips document describes how to run
font conversion, but the plethera of names is confusing.

It needs:

a TeX-name -> a virtual fontname -> a raw fontname -> an Adobe
fontname -> a PostScript modded Adobe font

What you end up with is ...
          in TeX document \font \tex-name = vtfm-name [at size]

The tex-name is then used through the document. The vtfm-name is a DOS
filename for both a virtual font (.vf) and its .tfm. These files were
written by vptovf. (One problem is that the document is a hybrid
of Unix and DOS notation so refer to Times_Roman.xxx.)

The virtual font (.vf) then makes a connection to another .tfm for the "raw"
font. As suggested in the dvips document, the two .tfm's should be
distinguished by starting the virtual tfm-name with P for PostScript and
other with R for raw.

You then have to set up a link to the actual PostScript file. The
information is in the dvips document (5.3, 5.4) but not
explicit. It is done by a line in psfonts.map, which includes the
DOS name of the raw tfm file, the Adobe font name (found in the
.inf file), a pointer to the source of the Adobe font, and any
PostScript mods. If the font is built-into the printer or known
to be already there, you just need the Adobe name. If you want it
downloading, you include a pointer to the .pfb file in the TeX
PostScript header directory.

So typical entries on DOS for a non-resident font are:

psir StoneInformal <sti_____.pfb
psic StoneInformal-Condensed <sti_____.pfb "/StoneInformal .8 ExtendFont"

If you miss out the Adobe name, the printer substitutes an UGLY
font that lives up to its name, especially as the spacing was
specified by your tfm.

   ics.uci.edu [128.195.1.1]:TeX/eplain/eplain-2.1.tar.Z

You can also get it by email from George Greenwade's file server if you
cannot ftp: mail fileserv@shsu.edu with a body of something like
`SENDME EPLAIN.EPLAIN_TEX'.

btxmac.tex no longer unconditionally defines \\ (to nothing useful), in
case some previous macro package has already defined it.

I inadvertently left arrow.tex out of the original 2.0. It's in 2.1, so
you can hack commutative diagrams to your heart's content.

I've included a section in the documentation on software patents and
user interface copyrights.

For those of you who haven't heard of Eplain: it is a collection of
macros intended to provide relatively low-level capabilities, regardless
of how your document appears. For example, it has macros to do symbolic
cross-referencing, but not macros to produce a section heading. It also
has some definitions that make it easier to change the conventions of
plain TeX's output. For example, it lets you produce left-justified
math displays by simply saying `\leftdisplays'.

Subject: Update to STYles at FILESERV/Niord

I'm truly sorry to those who have forwarded styles for me to add to our
archives. Things have been sort of busy, so I've gotten a little behind.
I will be sending out some notices within the next few days regarding
updates which have been made, but are either undocumented or unannounced.
This is my first set of announcements, so please bear with me.

The first files of interest are two updates by David Carlisle
<carlisle@computer-science.manchester.ac.uk> to longtable.sty, and
newarray.sty.

longtable.sty defines the longtable environment, a multipage version
of tabular. New in version 3:
* The table does not have to start at the top of the page.
* The documentation uses Mittelbach's doc.sty, so the documentation
file longtable.tex is no longer needed.
*  Support for footnotes.
* Many minor modifications. (One of the problems with using doc.sty
is that it makes the author read his own code!)

newarray.sty is an extension of Mittelbach's array.sty, which allows
the user to easily specify new column types, and delimiters around the
alignment. Also \extracolsep works with this style.

Version 1 has a rather embarrassing bug in the treatment of @ and !
expressions. These were prematurely expanded inside an \edef, which
may cause some rather spectacular errors. Please upgrade to Version 2
if you have a copy of Version 1.

To retrieve either of these files, please include the commands:
 SENDME STY.LONGTABLE
 SENDME STY.NEWARRAY
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.edu (FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET).

The second set of files were submitted by James Darrell McCauley
<jdm5548@diamond.tamu.edu>. First is an update to endfloat.sty, which puts
all LaTeX figures and tables on pages at the end of an article in
individual sections (optionally labelled). In-text references can be made
where the text of the table of figure should have been placed. This new
version (1.2) provides internationalization in naming and verifies that the
floats were used before a section is created for them. Include the command
SENDME STY.ENDFLOAT in your mail to FILESERV to retrieve this file.

Second in Darrell's submissions are cea.sty and cea.bst. These are the
unofficial LaTeX and BibTeX style files for Elsevier's ``Computers and
Electronics in Agriculture'' submissions, respectively.

To retrieve these, include in your mail message to FILESERV:
 SENDME STY.ENDFLOAT
 SENDME STY.CEA*

The third file set of interest is Peter Ungar's cropmark.tex, a TeX macro
to produce cropmarks in plain TeX. Include the command SENDME
STY.CROPMARK_TEX in your mail to FILESERV to retrieve this file.

Finally, Darrel Hankerson <hank@ducvax.auburn.edu> submitted a clean-up of
pagefoots.sty. This style numbers footnotes beginning on ``1'' for each
page. By default, it uses the \fnsymbol to "number" the footnotes (this is
controlled by the first line of \newfoots); and it gets rid of the usual
footnote rule, and inserts more vertical space for footnotes. Include the
command SENDME STY.PAGEFOOTS in your mail to FILESERV to retrieve this
file.

I've been meaning to post this since I put the files in place, so now's the
appropriate time.

                                 BOXEDEPS
                                 --------
The BOXEDEPS package includes the files associated with Laurent
Siebenmann's <lcs@matups.matups.fr> BoxedEPS, a highly portable package for
insertion of EPSF (Encapsulated PostScript Files) in TeX documents. It is
a fraction of a larger less portable package for several graphics norms on
the Mac which was initially put together for the GUTenberg special year
for graphics, 1989.

Included in this package is a new file (BOXEDEPS.OZTEX) for OzTeX 1.4.
OzTeX 1.4 interprets the Mac subdirectory delimiter ":" as a separator
between keywords in the \special command. This breaks the use of
subdirectories for included graphics files.

You may retrieve the entire package of 3 files by including the command:
 SENDME BOXEDEPS
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.edu (FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET).
A complete distribution of this version of BOXEDEPS requires all 3 files in
this package, so this command is suggested. If, for some reason, you should
only need one of these files, say BOXEDEPS.OZTEX, use the command:
 SENDME BOXEDEPS.OZTEX
in your message to FILESERV.

For anonymous ftp retrieval, the files are available from Niord.SHSU.edu
(192.92.115.8) in the directory [.BOXEDEPS].

Subject: DVIPJ HP PaintJet driver in the UK TeX Archive

Dave Love's DVIPJ driver for the HP PaintJet printer is now in the UK
TeX Archive in
    [tex-archive.drivers.dvipj]

The README follows.

- --David Osborne (pp UK TeX Archive group)

==========
This is a fairly dirty hack of Nelson Beebe's HP InkJet driver
(dvijet) to support colour printing on the HP Paintjet referred to in
TUGboat 11 (1990) p. 652--6; the LaTeX style file upon which the
article is based should be available in the contributed styles
collection. The driver assumes PaintJet transparency mode (which
doesn't make a great deal of difference to paper output, I find). The
output is a little faint with the materials we use, but OK for slides.

You might also like to investigate the GNU Ghostscript backend for the
PaintJet. v 2.1 will cope at least with dvips-generated PostScript,
it seems, as long as it doesn't use virtual fonts, whereupon the
spacing seems to go wrong. (v 2.1 doesn't have proper save and
restore.)

You will need Beebe's distribution, v 2.10. If you have the patch
program use `patch <dvipj.patch' to patch a few files for the PaintJet
(incuding the makefile -- be careful) and then do `make dvipj'. If
you don't have patch, you'll have to edit the relevant files by hand
on the basis of the `diff' output in dvipj.patch. You probably need
to generate the 180dpi pixel files to use it.

Subject: C2LaTeX translator in UK TeX Archive

John Ramsdell's c2latex utility to translate C programs into LaTeX is
now in the UK TeX Archive, in
    [tex-archive.utils.c2latex]
comprising a Makefile, a C program and its embedded documentation, as
well as the documentation extracted into a LaTeX source file.

A description extracted from the LateX file follows.

- --David Osborne (pp UK TeX Archive group)

==========
\ctolatex provides simple support for literate
programming in C\@. Given a C source file in which the comments have
been written in \LaTeX{}, \ctolatex{} converts the C source file into a
\LaTeX{} source file. It can be used to produce typeset listings of C
programs and/or documentation associated with the program.
