This is my fault: I told the compiler of the index that I was on the
point of putting it into the archive, but then never did! Here's a
copy (it's not very long).

Subject: Problems with AMSTeX on VMS

Can anyone help ?

I am installing TeX, LaTeX, AmS-TeX on our VAX VMS system. I am having a
problem with generating a format file for AmS-TeX as described in the read.me
document in [amstex2.amstex] After following the instructions I and running it
thru TEX/INIT I get the following error message:

Error is

Can anyone explain to me what has happened? what is this dummyft?

On a more general note, There does not seem to be any sort of overview on
installing TeX etc on VMS or is there? I would like something that explains
about font files, format files, what is WEB, WEAVE etc, all the documentation I
seem to read assumes familiarity with all of these peculiar TeX widgets.

you BibTeX distribution should include the file btxhak.tex, which
contains the details of the language. its not very clear, but thats
all there is. if you dont have that file, its in any decent archive of
bibtex. on tex.ac.uk its in [TEX-ARCHIVE.BIBTEX.STYLES]

good luck. you'll need it. the BibTeX language is `fun' after a
while, but before that its a sod

Can someone please tell me if there is a way of overprinting "DRAFT"
greyed on a postscript document? I am using ARBORTEXT's DVILASER/PS
which seems to have a prewritten prolog to ensure that the overprint
appears on each page, but being new to postscript I have no idea how
to generate text, still less how to grey it out (if indeed that is
possible)

cant help you with dvilaser/ps; but for others who have the same
question and who use dvips, this is what I use; put in a file called
eg draft.pro and use with dvips -h draft.pro

with the standard DVILASER/PS overlay system with a couple of obvious
amendments. If anyone else uses DVILASER/PS, the command needed is:

using \cline with it. I found version 1 in the archive yesterday; maybe
you could insert the following in the archive and put a brief note in the

From: "George D. Greenwade" <bed_gdg@edu.SHSU>
Subject: Chicago Manual of Style files on FILESERV/Niord

Any number of times, people have asked for a Chicago Manual of Style
(Turabian) citation format in BibTeX. I would like to thank Glenn Paulley
<gnpaulle@maytag.waterloo.edu>, who has forwarded me a set of three files
to do this, which are now available from SHSU. I have not tested these
exhaustively, but it appears that they are somewhat LaTeX specific in
design, although I am sure that the LaTeX sub-style option, chicago.sty,
can be tweaked to operate in TeX.

The citation formats supported include:
      (author-last-name year)
      (author-last-name and author-last-name year)
      (author-last-name et al. year)
      (author-last-name)
      author-last-name
      author-last-name (year)
      (author-last-name and author-last-name)
      (author-last-name et al.)
      (year) or (year,year)
      year or year,year
The reference list ordering is alphabetical by author or whatever passes
for author in the absence of one. Support for abbreviated author lists and
for year-only citations are provided by having the citations actually look
like:
      \citeauthoryear{full-author-info}{abbrev-author-info}{year}

The chicago.sty LaTeX file is required to use the BibTeX styles chicago.bst
and chicagoa.bst.

Features of chicago.bst:
========================
 - full names used in citations, but abbreviated citations are available.
 - if an entry has a "month", then the month and year are also printed
   as part of that bibitem.
 - book, inbook, and manual use "location: publisher" (or organization)
for address and publisher. All other types list publishers separately.
 - "pp." are used to identify page numbers for all entry types except
   articles.
 - organization is used as a citation label if neither author nor editor
   is present (for manuals).
 - "et al." is used for long author and editor lists.

Features of chicagoa.bst:
=========================
 - supports an "annotation" field for annotated bibliographies.
 - all other features of chicago.bst.

To retrieve these three files via e-mail, include:
 SENDME BST.CHICAGO*
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET (FILESERV@SHSU.edu).
The files are available for anonymous ftp retrieval from Niord.SHSU.edu
(192.92.115.8) in the directory [FILESERV.BST], either individually or
packaged together in the ZIP archive CHICAGO.ZIP.
