i cant recall offhand whether DC has a thorn. i think not. Julian

sadly, its a two-stage job. you have to
 a) tell PostScript the character is available, if its not normally
there; this may mean changing the encoding vector in PS. you can
do this on the fly with a header file, or permanently to (a copy
of) the font (using Y&Y's supplied utility)
 b) tell TeX where the thorn is. since there is no `defined' place for
a thorn, virtual fonts are fairly irrelevant there. if the thorn
ends up at character 245, then
      \def\thorn\char'245
    is all you need

were you comparing Lucida Math or Lucida Bright with CM, or the
combination of all the Lucidas?

Subject: unix archives

I have reason to believe that the bitmapped fonts in

[tex-archive.src.unix-archives]

are corrupt. I cannot check the filename, as TEX is down yet again, but
it is something like psfonts.tar_uue or possibly adobefonts.tar_uue.

I have printed out some of these fonts, and I have noticed the following
when previewed using testfont.tex.

Avant Garde Oblique pagko.300pk j and J malformed
Bookman Light Italic pbkli.300pk H, N, f, j malformed
Bookman Demibold Italic pbkdi.300pk f, j malformed
Palatino Italic pplri.300pk f, j malformed
Palatino Bold Italic pplbi.300pk f looks odd

I have not tried at other resolutions.

if you can unpack the archive, and get *anything* out, this is not our
concern. please report problems with the *product* to its author, Karl
Berry (karl@cs.umb.edu). I suspect he will reply that these fonts are
intended for previewing only, and it doesnt matter about the
malformation.

i'd recommend using ps2pk to create preview bitmaps dynamically,
instead of this canned set of bitmaps

Like a "j" that looks like a dotted comma---yes, really comma sized---or an
"f" without an ascender?
I suspect that this archive is corrupted in some way.

I don't have access to a postscript device, and was hoping to use these
as PK fonts on a laserjet connected to a PC.

What does ps2pk do?

if you can unpack it without warnings from tar or compress, its Karl's
copy which was corrupt before we got it...

 > What does ps2pk do?

takes a PostScript Type1 outline font and creates a TeX .pk bitmap
font. you have to have the PostScript font source, of course. the
cheapest way to get the standard ones is to buy a copy of ATM. if you
have Corel Draw, that can export excellent Type1 fonts.

The UK TeX Archive (daughter unix service) stocks ps2pk in various
forms, including DOS binaries.

Huh? TEX was rebooted with some changed system parameters on Sunday
afternoon. Apart from this 10min interruption, and two others about
5--6 weeks ago due to power outages, TEX has been continually reachable
over JANET for the past three months, since the last scheduled downtime.

Connection from the Internet has been almost as good, although there
have been a couple of occasions on which it was found that the IP server
daemon was being a CPU hog: these have each been fixed as soon as
discovered, certainly within less than a working day.

Almost every day I tried to call TeX for interactive login
last week I could not connect.
The same has happened on and off this week. For instance, only yesterday
I had trouble in the middle of the day.

Something is clearly wrong somewhere, though I have had no trouble so far today

not OK. forget this step

just use the .fmt file you created, with no further ado. note that if
you make an alias of virtex called "latex", and run it, it will look
for latex.fmt automatically. very convenient

after Xmas I hope to find time to make a `canned' Sparc TeX setup,
with binaries and everything ready to go. until I, or someone else,
offers such a (tested!) system, you have to roll your own with the
sources.
 - if you have never used TeX or installed it before, order a tape
from Dave Osborne (see end of weekly UKTeX mailing) and follow
   instructions

 - if you have some experience of TeX, acquire using ftp the web and
web2c compressed tar archives from the UK TeX Archive. unpack them
(in the same directory) and get stuck into READMEs. Its pretty easy
   these days

I apologize for the terseness of the descriptions; this is just
intended as a pointer in case you want to look more closely. Most of
these packages have been announced on various lists. The directory

Various style files for LaTeX have been silently updated.

All of these packages will, of course, filter onto the UK TeX JANET/mail
Archive on uk.ac.tex, but readers should be aware that this process is
not (yet) automatic (the two machines have different filestores), so
it may take a little while.

Subject: TeX and TUG News latest issue

The latest issue of TeX and TUG News is now available for anonymous ftp
at rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de (129.69.1.12) as soft/tex/digests/ttn/ttn1n3.*,
at niord.shsu.edu (192.92.115.8), in directory ttn, ttn1n3.* (in VMSSpeak
[FILESERV.TTN]TTN1N3.*)
and at tex.ac.uk (134.151.40.18) as [TEX-ARCHIVE.DIGESTS.TTN]TTN1N3.* (as of
1992.12.7 it is not yet available at tex.ac.uk but should be any day now).
In addition, all previous issues have been slightly modified and renamed
to make it easier to retrieve them with wildcards (e.g. to retrieve all
of volume 1: 'mget ttn1*'). The convention is that all names start with
the letters 'ttn' followed by a number representing the volume followed by
the letter 'n' ('n' for number) followed by the issue number, followed by a
'.', followed by an extension---usually 'tex' or 'sty'. This naming
convention also corresponds with dek's suggestion in the TeXbook (p.278 in
my copy).

                            --------
                MetaFont in Theory and Practice

The U.K. TeX Users' Group are pleased to announce their first ever
Scottish Conference, to take place at the University of Glasgow on
March 29th--31st, 1993. The theme of the conference is the use of TeX
and MetaFont for languages other than American English. It is hoped
that Dominik Wujastyk, for example, will talk on the development
of the British English hyphenation patterns produced by himself and
Graham Toal, and on his use of TeX and MetaFont for typesetting Sanskrit
texts; that Bernard Gaulle will present `good typesetting practice' for
French texts; and that Yannis Haralambous will discuss the various exotic
languages which he typesets in TeX and for which he has developed the
most beautiful fonts.

The Conference is scheduled to last three days, but the first of these
is purely for travel and socialisation; we assemble late Monday afternoon,
and adjourn for the Conference dinner that same evening. On Tuesday,
a distinguished panel of invited speakers will present a variety of
papers on the use of TeX and MetaFont for non-American languages, and
there will be plenty of time for discussion and questions. On Wednesday,
we offer for the first time in the U.K. two tutorials on the use of MetaFont,
both in practice (e.g. `how do I build a complete set of Computer Modern
fonts for a new laser printer which we have just acquired?') and in theory
(`How would I go about designing and implementing an entirely new font in
MetaFont, for a language which has never before been printed using TeX?')

In order to get an accurate estimate of potential numbers, which will
allow us to make an early reservaton with the University and keep costs
to a minimum, it would be appreciated if those who would hope to attend
could communicate immediately with the conference organiser, preferably
through the medium of electronic mail: please send a brief message
indicating your interest to:

        <P.Taylor@Uk.Ac.Rhbnc.Vax> (JANET/UK)
        <P.Taylor@Vax.Rhbnc.Ac.Uk> (Internet/rest of world)

A more formal announcement, including full details of costs, will be
distributed as soon as likely numbers are known.
