A colleague wants to be able to set folksongs side by side ie the original on
the left and a translation on the right (his translation is line-by-line so the
number of lines do match). Can anyone advise on the easiest way to do this?

Subject: re: tex.ftp

Is it the case, or am I misunderstanding this, that tex.ftp is set up
to behave the way that SHSU does, say? Thus, can I retrieve files and obtain
help by communicating with a fileserver?

If so, what address do I send the message to, and what message?
HELP? LIST? GET? SENDME?

What I am getting at is, for the majority(?) of us who don't have FTP and
don't understand FTP-speak, is there any way of communicating with this
machine?

yes, you can. but its not very efficient to do so if you have
got any kind of ftp / file transfer access. the mailserver is not
advertised yet, because it (mailserver@ftp.tex.ac.uk) only works with
sites using SMTP, unless they route via Nottingham. Contact Dave
Osborne for details if you really need it

"help" is always a good place to start, and will work with the address
above if your site is talking SMTP

there are no (?) academic sites in the UK without JANET file transfer
facilities, are there? which is fully suppported by all sites? this
gives you two options
 - direct file transfer from uk.ac.tex, which now has a mirror of the
   Internet archive (a few problems and gaps, which will be fixed this
   week!)
 - file transfer via uk.ac.ft-relay

but if your site is not even contemplating a JIPS service, I suggest
you get on the right committee and fight for it. the effort of
learning "FTP-speak" is a) easier than learning JANET rubbish (differs
in each implementation, so far as I can see) and b) applicable to a
much wider domain

and last but not least, do not forget the mail server on uk.ac.tex
which will send you whatever you need

Most of the contents of

[tex-archive.systems.pc.emtex.betatest]

and

[tex-archive.systems.pc.emtex.bonus]

are now inaccessible to PC users because they are in fixed-length record
format---makes sense, when you think of it, that emTeX should only be available
to non-PC users.

they are inaccessible to that portion of the community which is
limited to JANET file transfer, and does not have a Vax (if you do,
use CODE=FAST on the transfer). This has absolutely nothing to do with
their useability by PC users.

Subject: Subdivisions in list (LaTeX 2.09)

I am by now innured to the fact that if I want to do something that
LaTeX objects to, then I am probably looking at it the wrong way.
Here is the problem and my solution in the hope it may be of use to
someone else or of interest to the LaTeX 3 development.

I am producing a long enumerated list and wanted to put subdivisions
within the list. So I tried

\documentstyle{article}
[...]
\item ...
\subsection*{Next lot}
\item

and found that LaTeX just hangs. Using emTeX (and new LaTeX with NFSS)
it must get into some very tight loop, as there is no disk activity and
I can't break in. I have to reboot and when I go in again the log file
is empty and the dvi has not been changed, so no evidence. I've also
run it on SUN sparc LaTeX and found it is hanging on the \subsection*
but doesn't fill up the log with iterations.

- -----
The pragmatic solution is to make the sections into separate lists but
preserve the list counter. There's no provision for this; I guess that
enumi etc are re-allocated as new counters every time a list is started.
It took a little fiddling as the LaTeX User Guide only mentions \value
in the reference section, not at pp 91/92. However, this works

\newcounter{lastitem}  % in preamble
[...]
\setcounter{lastitem}{\value{enumi}}
\end{description}

\subsection*{Next lot}
\begin{enumerate}
\setcounter{enumi}{\value{lastitem}}

Does anyone know of any tools for taking x.tfm, x.pk, y.tfm and y.pk and
producing xy.tfm and xy.pk containing x\Union y?

And I don't mean virtual fonts!!!!!!

Preferably, the program should map each character to a different character
code. I am thinking of the output of programs like BM2FONT and MFPIC which
is highly fragmented because the number of characters in each font can be
very small.

why not? because you don't want the lots of little files? there is
little other argument against it. virtual fonts are a Good Thing

if i were you, i'd put the effort in persuading Friedhelm Sowa to make
it an option in bm2font itself. i'd imagine it would be trivial for
him, and would save you lots of work in even more little utility
programs

If using this with seminar.sty, you must also upgrade to seminar.sty
v0.93 or the frame styles in semcolor.sty won't work.

There are lots of changes, once again, and you are encouraged to
upgrade, so that you can keep up with the user interface.

Many of the changes have been distributed previously as
pst-beta.tex, pst-char.tex, pst-grad.tex and pstricks.bug.

Requests for more features will be ignored. PSTricks is already
too big for its own good.
