Subject: Bad page breaks

I have been working on printing the University's telephone directory
using LaTeX. This involves a perl script converting an ASCII text
database into a number of TeX input files.

I'm using \paragraph commands to section each department, and then
using a tabbing environment to print the information in tidy columns.

But I've run into a small problem in that in one or two places
I'm getting a page break right after the \paragraph, before any
names have been printed.

I've tried using \nopagebreak[4] immediately after the \paragraph
but this hasn't worked. I think I need some help in understanding
how TeX's penalties work as I think this is the solution to my problem,
but Lamport isn't very forthcoming on this. Perhaps UKTUG might
like to address this in future meetings or in {\sl Baskerville} ?

Subject: warning about \include

A colleague has just lost a lot of work through confusing
\include with \input. So here is a warning in case other
people are not aware of the distinction.

\input takes a filename with or without an extension.

\include takes a filename with no extension. If you put
    \include{x}
then latex will write a file x.aux. So if you put
   \include{myfile.pic}
then latex will write to myfile.pic.aux. With DOS
truncation this becomes myfile.pic, so the original
`included' file gets completely overwritten.

WHat is the version of DVIWIN on tex.ac.uk, please?

I have recently been talking to the author, and he
recommended getting ver 2.81 rather than 2.8.

Thanks!

              LaTeX2e -- Preliminary Release Available

Leslie Lamport and the LaTeX3 project team

                       21 December 1993

The new release of LaTeX is now available for testing.

LaTeX2e is the new standard version of LaTeX -- prepared and supported
by the LaTeX3 project team. It is upwardly compatible with LaTeX 2.09
documents, but contains new features.

Over the years many extensions of LaTeX have been developed. This is,
of course, a welcome development, since it shows that the LaTeX system
is in a healthy state. It has, however, had one unfortunate
consequence: there are now several incompatible systems, in the sense
of format (.fmt) files, all claiming to be LaTeX. Therefore, in order
to process documents coming from various places, a site maintainer
needs to provide several format files: LaTeX (with and without NFSS),
SLiTeX, AmSLaTeX, and so on. In addition, when looking at a source
file it is not always clear for which format the document was written.

LaTeX2e puts an end to this unsatisfactory situation---it will give
access to all such extensions based on a single format and thus end
the proliferation of mutually incompatible dialects of LaTeX 2.09.

It uses an enhanced version (NFSS2) of the New Font Selection
Scheme. Files such as amstex.sty (formerly the AmSLaTeX format) or
slides.sty (formerly the SLiTeX format) will become extension
packages, all working with this single format.

The introduction of this new version will also make it possible to add
a small number of often-requested features (such as extended versions
of \newcommand).

To summarize:

 * Standardisation: a single format incorporating NFSS2, to replace the
present multiplicity of incompatible formats (NFSS,
                 lfonts, pslfonts, etc.)
 * Maintenance: a standardised system supported by a reliable
                 maintenance policy.

LaTeX2e adheres, as far as possible, to the following principles:

 * Unmodified version 2.09 document files can be processed with
   LaTeX2e.

 * All new features of LaTeX2e conform to the conventions of version
2.09, making it as easy as possible for current users to learn to
   use them.

LaTeX2e is described in a new edition of `LaTeX: A Document Preparation
System' by Leslie Lamport (to appear during 1994) and `The LaTeX
Companion' by Goossens, Mittelbach and Samarin, both published by
Addison-Wesley.

LaTeX2e will be distributed twice a year. This distribution is a
preliminary test release, and doesn't contain all of the files that
will be part of the full release. In particular, it does not contain
the planned extensions in the area of graphics inclusion.

The first full release will be available in Spring 1994.

This is a test release, so please get it and test it on as many
different systems as possible!

LaTeX2e can be retrieved by anonymous ftp from the CTAN archives:

   ftp.tex.ac.uk /tex-archive/macros/latex/distribs/latex2e-test
   ftp.shsu.edu /tex-archive/macros/latex/distribs/latex2e-test
   ftp.uni-stuttgart.de /tex-archive/macros/latex/distribs/latex2e-test

Please report any problems with LaTeX2e by using the report-generating
program latexbug.tex, included in the LaTeX2e distribution. Error
reports can be sent to the following mail address:

   latex-bugs@rus.uni-stuttgart.de

Note that no one on the programming team will be reachable until
January 1994 (to give them a chance to see their families again). All
mail sent to the above address will be answered then.

Seasons greetings to you all!

Subject: The UK TeX Users Group Programme of meetings for 1994

19th January, 1994: Choosing and Using PostScript fonts with
TeX: The meeting will be held at Rewley House in Oxford. Speakers
will include Sebastian Rahtz, Alan Jeffrey, Angus Duggan and Will
Shaman. There will be a panel session to address wider issues. The
meeting is designed to be of practical help to the ever-increasing
number of TeX users who have access to PostScript printers and
phototypesetters. Questions abound: How do you get TeX metric
files for the fonts in your printer? When you buy fonts, what are
all those .pfb, .pfm and .afm files? How does the dvi driver
distinguish between Metafont fonts and PostScript fonts? How do you
change your whole document so that it is typeset in Univers? How
do you use a PostScript phototypesetter? What font families go
together? Which text fonts work with which maths fonts? There are
answers, and you can get them at this meeting. Local organizer: Ian Hall
A booking form is appended to this list.

21st--22nd March, 1994: LaTeX2e:
Continuing the tradition established by the successful two day
meeting at RHBNC last year, this meeting will concentrate on this
recently released new standard for LaTeX. Speakers will be from
the LaTeX3 team (some from across the water -- no expense
spared!). We plan to cover how to: install it; integrate local
styles; use scaleable fonts; integrate graphics; process existing
documents; use the new features; write extension packages, and
much much more. This meeting will be held at Warwick University, in
the heart of England. The cost will be in the region of
80--90 pounds (to include one night's accommodation). Local organizer:
Malcolm Clark Programme organizer: Chris Rowley

2nd week of July, 1994: A training meeting, on Font Selection
System 2 (N/FSS2): To be held at Cambridge University. Numbers will
be limited. Local organizers: Robin Fairbairns & Jonathan Fine

19th October, 1994: Annual General Meeting: To be held at Aston
University, Birmingham. Your annual chance to make suggestions for
future meetings, elect committee members, and to raise anything
else you wish to about the workings and activities of the Group.

November/December, 1994: TeX, SGML & electronic publishing:
Exact date, speakers and location unconfirmed (at least we've got
  a title!).

All members of \uktug{} will be provided with more details of these
meetings as they become available. Reports of the meetings will
appear in Baskerville, the organ of the group.
