I have just unpacked a set and can confirm that it is complete. It requires 7 (seven) discs and on disk 7 is unstuffit. Caution You should copy unstuffit to your hard disc and launch it. Select join to merge the 7 segments into one archive and then unstuff the joined archive. EmTeX The documentation refers to pk102.exe. USe PKUNZIP.exe. Another disadvantage of the version there (when I last looked) is that it only supports .pxl files. The latest Ghostscript (2.4) used with dvips is probably now a better bet for PaintJet output, but remember to tell dvips the correct resolution and ensure it has access to the relevant .pk files or a mf mode to make them. The Laserwriter-ish fonts in this release now have metrics consistent with the dvips tfms (and it has working save/restore). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Apr 92 17:25:15 +0000 From: Philip Taylor (RHBNC) Subject: Re: Using PostScript in LaTeX To: CBS%UK.AC.SURREY.EE::EE01TH,CBS%UK.AC.TEX::UKTEX-REVIEWERS CC: CHAA006 Subj: RE: using postscript in LaTeX >>> I use LaTeX within a Unix environment, and use dvitps as >>> the dvi file to postscript file converter. >>> I have a postscript file (which originated in MacDraw) >>> which has a picture in the centre of it (it's actually the >>> university crest). TeX and freinds all seem to have compiled fine, but I now want to use a screen previewer for X. Reading the file NOTE-xdvi in ./DVIware/crt-viewers/X [or somwhere close to that] it says that compilation under SUN Openlook is problematic and needs extra library files, or major alterations to the makefiles. Barbara Beeton has asked me to write an item for TUGboat on the circumstances in which \jobname gets set to "texput". There are a lot of cases, many quite obscure. There is one particular one which I can't understand the rationale for at all: \font forces \jobname to "texput" if it is not already set. For example, if your response to the ** prompt (or command line input, if your favourite TeX implementation supports it) is \font\gerbil=cmr10\input wombat you will find that the DVI file is "texput.dvi", not "wombat.dvi", and so on. The code that is responsible for this is the following line at the start of |new_font| in section 1257 of tex.web: begin if job_name=0 then open_log_file; {avoid confusing \.{texput} with the font name} However, I can't understand the agenda behind the comment here: how can confusion arise? Nor can I make anything obvious go wrong in a TeX in which this line is removed. Any ideas? It depends how much I can squeeze on a 1.44Mb disk. This will not happen until after Easter. Joining the betatest disk will be two `bonus disks' which will include dvips etc. On past experience with earlier tests of the revised mfjob and dvidrv, the effort to try these betatest versions is well worth while. the drivers now generate fonts dynamically as needed, which is utterly wonderful, and lets you save masses of disk space if (like me) you use only a small selection of the available fonts. It provides style files `times.sty', `palatino.sty' etc which can be simply used by the casual user to change the font families used in a document. The font names used are those widely promulgated by Karl Berry and found in dvips. This version differs from earlier ones in that it no longer requires the user to build a new format file. The style files will dynamically load the necessary macros, as long as the basic format is the NFSS. Thanks to Rainer Schoepf for pushing me to make this change. These macros derive from an original implementation in 1989 when the NFSS first appeared, enhanced with ideas from the similar macros of Timothy van Zandt and Kresten Krab Thorup. The LaTeX file `psnfss.tex' describes the distribution. The file `psnfss.eps' is a PostScript version which can be printed without further ado. I apologize for using the names of style options like `times.sty'; it must be very confusing to newcomers to find so many different schemes masquerading under these names for so many years. It is difficult to find a solution. `Times.sty' would, sadly, not be acceptable to DOS or VMS users. The `correct' distribution home for these files is in the UK TeX Archive (tex.ac.uk (134.151.40.18) on Internet) in [tex-archive.latex.styles.fontsel.soton] Sebastian Rahtz spqr@minster.york.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 92 09:43:36 -0500 From: Alan Hoenig Subject: GhostScript---new version (2.4) A major upgrade of the GhostScript package is now available. I picked up a copy, version 2.4, via ftp from prep.ai.mit.edu in directory pub/gnu. GhostScript allows one to preview postscript files on a variety of platforms, including MS-DOS. The MS-DOS executables include a module for 386 machines. Version 2.4 now allows loading any outline fonts, not just the single generic font available in earlier versions of this program. You'll need three files---one containing the fonts, one for the MS-DOS executables, and one for the documentation and source files. These are big files. Fonts requires about 2.2 meg, and the others about 1.25 meg, so make sure there is enough room on your target machine. ------------------------------ Date: 25 Feb 92 11:47:41 +0000 From: spqr@uk.ac.york.minster Subject: XY-pic version 2.5 in UK TeX Archive I have put a current version of Kristoffer H. Rose's `xypic' package in the UK TeX Archive, in [tex-archive.tex-style.xypic] a description follows Sebastian Rahtz **** XY-pic version 2.5 has been released. It fixes the following bugs present in XY-pic version 2.4 [with thanks]: + Straight diagonal arrows are now correct even when diagonal :-). + Bend arrow bugs fixed [Jon Trowbridge]. and adds the following features: + Added (FACTOR) to \rotate to allow arbitrary rotation. + ` intermediate points now accept an optional /RADIUS argument. + Added \Tip with wide tip. You can update to the new version in either of the following ways: A) If you have XY-pic version 2.4 then a patch is available. It has been posted just after this message and is available by anonymous ftp from diku.dk [129.142.96.1] as "pub/TeX/misc/xypic-2.4to2.5.Z". B) You can retrieve the entire package by anonymous ftp from diku.dk [129.142.96.1] as described in the TRAILER below. The new version is upwards compatible with the old one except for one thing: arrows can now only be broken once (not counting arrow tipes). This is explained in the manual. Newcomers will find the TRAILER of the package below. Regards, Kristoffer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAILER: -*-text-*- introducing XY-pic version 2. XY-pic is a macro package for AMS-TeX, plain TeX, LaTeX, and AMS-LaTeX for typesetting diagrams with the following characteristics: *** Specified as a matrix of entries aligned in rows and columns. *** Any entry may be connected to any other entry using arrows that are automatically rotated and stretched as required to meet their target; a variety of arrow styles may be used. *** Arrows may be decorated with labels that are `tied` to a specified point of the arrow independent of its direction. *** Special support for arrows that cross each other, arrows that `go by' other entries, combined arrows, and arrows that bend around other entries. *** Support for entries and arrows that are independent of the matrix structure. If you wish to check out the facilities before installation, and you have a 300 dpi PostScript printer, then you can print the file "xypicman.ps" that contains a formatted version of the manual. (In the distribution it is compressed into the file "xypicman.ps.Z"). Please note that XY-pic is under `copyleft' as specified by the GNU General Public License. ------------------------------ UK TeX ARCHIVE at ASTON UNIVERSITY >>> UK.AC.TEX <<< *** Interactive and file transfer access *** JANET: Host: uk.ac.tex, Username: public, Password: public DTE 000020120091 Internet: host tex.ac.uk [134.151.40.18] For telnet access, login: public, password: public For anonymous ftp, login: anonymous, password: *** Mail server *** Send mail to TeXserver@uk.ac.tex (JANET) or TeXserver@tex.ac.uk (rest of the world) with message body containing the word HELP \section FILES OF INTEREST [tex-archive]00readme.txt [tex-archive]00directory.list [tex-archive]00directory.size [tex-archive]00directory_dates.list [tex-archive]00last30days.files \section DIGESTS This year's UKTeX back issues are stored in the archive in directory [tex-archive.digests.uktex.92] This year's TeXhax back issues are stored in the archive in directory [tex-archive.digests.texhax.92] Latest TeXhax: V92 #05 TeXMaG back issues are stored in the archive in directory [tex-archive.digests.tex-mag] Latest TeXMaG: V5N3 \section MEDIA DISTRIBUTIONS \subsection Washington Unix TeX distribution tape Latest copy of May/June 1991 contains: TeX 3.14, LaTeX 2.09, Metafont 2.7, plus many utilities suitable for Unix 4.2/4.3BSD & System V tar format, 1600bpi, blockfactor 20, 1 file (36Mb) Copies available on: One 2400ft 0.5" tape sent to Aston with return labels AND return postage OR One Quarter-Inch Cartridge, QIC-120 or QIC-150 format (DC600A or DC6150) sent with envelope AND stamps for return postage to Nottingham (This service is offered only within the UK).
